First game I saw on my first visit back was Boxing Day 1989. 2-2.
Chavsea equalised with about 10 minutes to go. |

That programme brings back happy memories. Always used to watch it round my nan's (god rest her soul) with my old man. Then have a cheese and ketchup sandwich (?) and head off to Palace.
I was obviously an easily impressed child.

Holmesdale rarely had any atmosphere in those days, until the Arthur Wait was made all seater, then it became THE place to stand, sort of by default

Noades: "Although Charlton may feel that they're lodgers, we would like them to feel that they share the stadium and they share the ground."
No we fecking didn't. That win at Old Trafford was one of the most outrageous bits of daylight robbery you'll ever see in league football; Nigel Martyn won it single-handedly. I've never seen Palace take the points in the face of such unrelenting pressure and lack of attacking intent. Loved it at the final whistle but it was sheer torture to watch. |

Not your fault it was S&G on TV - and better them than the likes of Jimmy Saville and Jim Davidson |

great memories, I used to get given my £1 for school lunch, but used to get up early every day for school prep myself a quick sandwich and pocket the money so I could stand at the front of the Holmesdale.
Great to hear the legend Elton Welsby narrating on S&G To this day I remember Greavsie predicted we'd "go all the way" in his league prediction forecast in "90 minutes" magaizine at the beginning of the 91/92 campaign, then we imploded |

Pretty painful watching but better than listening to Andy Gray and Richard Keys some years later.

It was a dreadful programme, poorly presented.

I used to enjoy Saint and Greavsie, some of you guys seem a bit too sensitive about simple footy banter

I remember at that time my main source for football news was Ceefax and Teletext. The Internet was a distant dream....

Great stuff. Thoroughly enjoyed that. Some good old names, including Charlie Nicholas at Aberdeen - I don't remember him going there.

Always felt that Jimmy Greaves gave Palace a bit of 'extra' needle than was necessary - then found out recently (in a newspaper article by Greaves about the MK Dons v Wimbledon Cup Tie) that when he was starting out as a youngster at Chelsea in the late 50s/early 60s that he actually used to live in a flat with his wife at Wimbledon's old ground at Plough Lane (nearly 30 years before they joined the League) - not many people with Wimbledon connections seem to like us - so it may explain some of his bias.
Greaves, of course, is known by older fans as being an unrelenting piss-artist who's final years in the game were spent in a drunken haze in the early 70's - so it probably took most of the next two decades for his sozzled brain to settle down anyway.

To view the link you have to Register or Login Greaves said in his autobiography: “I lost the 70s completely. “They passed me by. I was drunk from 1972 to 1977. On occasions I would drink up to 20 pints of beer in the course of a day, go home, then drink a whole bottle of vodka before going to bed. “I put a bottle of vodka by my bed so I could have a drink as soon as I woke up. One day, 28 February 1978, I thought, ‘I can’t do this any more’. “I haven’t had a drink since. Long may it continue, though there’s no guarantees.” |

Was there any truth in the rumour we where in for Greaves at one point, around the time he went to West Ham.
