1895 Crystal Palace FC v Aston Villa programme sold at auction
A surviving programme for Crystal Palace v Aston Villa, played on 30 November 1895 in Crystal Palace stadium, was sold for £1000 at auction yesterday:
To view the link you have to Register or Login The deployment of this amateur team, coached by the manager of the Corinthians, Nicholas Lane Jackson, was the first action in the Crystal Palace Company's ten-year battle with the FA to allow a resident professional Crystal Palace FC to play in the Crystal Palace stadium. The FA finally relented in 1905. The full story of the Crystal Palace Company's decade-long struggle to persuade the Football Association to allow Palace to be formed can be found in Volume 2 of the Origin of Crystal Palace FC which can be found here: To view the link you have to Register or Login |

Fascinating. Not happy with the colours we played in that day though.

NL Jackson manned Palace's team mostly with his Corinthian players, some of whom were current England international footballers. Palace scored first against Villa, led 3-2, and the game stood at 3-3 with 15 minutes left, but in the end, the home team collapsed under the pressure and lost 7-3 against their professional opponents.

Anybody else noticed that our CF was called A.N. Guy?
Perhaps they picked up any guy from the street to play up there; after all, it's often not been a specialist position for us

Several players in both the Villa and Palace sides named there, Smith, Crabtree, Reynolds for AV and Stanbrough, Henfrey and Topham for CP were England full internationals, so probably a good standard for the era.

FDB should've gone with the tried and tested 2-3-5 formation too.
