The Sunday Times Rich List 2017: Boom time for billionaires

Good to know that as workers got pay cuts and we suffer austerity:

Quote:
Our 29th edition also reveals that this year’s 500 richest individuals and families are now wealthier than the entire top 1,000 were in 2016.
Quote:
Their wealth rose by 14% over the past year to a record £658bn, it shows.
Since austerity started the top 1000 have nearly doubled their wealth. Staggering.

Unless my maths is wrong that’s £10,000 for every person in the uk and £5000 in terms of the increase since austerity.

Before you wind yourself up into a frenzy, how much of that money is in Britain. How much of the earnings are genuinely accessible to HMRC.

Why are so many of them actually foreign, what brings them here. Even some have taken British citizenship.

Anyone know, you may save CR from bursting a blood vessel.

I’m very far from sure that the mathematical logic holds up here. We are not comparing like with like.

How does the answer to any of those questions change the key point? The key point is that wealth disparity has significantly widened during a period of austerity when the rest of us are told to accept wage stagnation since "We are all in it together".

All the people on the list are UK resident. 5 of them are UK resident and have sole citizenship of the UK - these 5 have all seen their wealth rise.
Is there any reason why these 5 should not be accessible to HMRC?

It depends where their wealth is. The owner of The Daily Mail, for instance, has it all tucked away in tax havens and is domiciled in France for tax purposes.

While millions are suffering wages cuts and austerity, in many cases devastating lives and in some cases costing them, I can’t see why anyone wouldn’t be upset that this is happening while the super rich get massively richer. You would have to be very callous not to.

You can use whatever whataboutery you like but the fact is that the super rich have piled on their wealth as the rest suffer.

The increase in wealth is worth £5000 per person in the U.K.

Global inequality has gone down the same route.

Less GDP goes to wages than at any time since 1945.

Good point.

They’ve rolled up their sleeves and put an extra shift in. Not like those lazy nurses and teachers.

Well for most of them the money isn't in the UK, the richest Hinduja have the majority of their money in India, other places but not much in Britain, it applies to most them.

I don't see how its relevant to cuts or austerity or your calculation.

This is good news as trickle down cannot be far off and we all begin to benefit.

All I see is win-win.

Yes and remember to show your gratitude whilst also ensuring the trickle down tap is open to the max, by getting your take aways and coffees from the big corporates.

Absolutely. They are simply cutting out the middle man, and will trickle down directly.

The rich are getting richer and this is being driven by changes in technology and globalisation. Unfortunately they would also prefer to see people starve rather than share in their wealth.
