Games tend to open up more during the second half. Perhaps we should start with Benteke and in a more predictable formation. Take him off in the second half for McArthur and then play as we did at the start of the Everton game. Teams have struggled to adapt to a front three of Zaha, Townsend, and RLC playing without a striker. Imagine having to do so during the second half of a game when the legs are tiring and you're set up to contain Benteke.

This might be particularly effective if we're defending a lead. At which point bringing on McArthur would help fill space in the midfield.

As for Ward, he was safe in defence against Everton and created our second goal. Of course he starts ahead of TFM.

This is the formation I would go with. I'd like to see Tomkins back in the starting 11. Tomkins and Sakho only played 3 full games together last season, but looked very comfortable. Boro, West Brom and Watford - all clean sheets.

That dribbling/ole shit was really getting my goat on saturday. Sakho and Speroni were at it as well.. Surely RL will be at them about a time and a place for showboating, and a time to get rid.

As someone pointed out Hodgeson plays 442, although personally I'd prefer this.

Stoke have been playing 343 or a derivative of that all season and I doubt they will change that for us. They will adapt to us and playing away but will in essence line up that way.

They currently play Diouf (originally a CF) as RWB and Pieters as LWB. On paper this isn't great but having watched them a few times it does work for them. The pressing game that is normally associated with making 343 work hasn't been easy for them but the effectiveness of Fletcher and Allen in the middle has compensated and when attacking on the break they can look very good. Shaquiri remains a handful on his day and Choupo-Moting is powerful and good in the air. Not clinical but won't be easy. Ramadan Sobhi is not to be ignored either - very tricky - but hasn't had a great start this year.

You would expect that this all plays into our hands a little. If we can get Andros and Wilf into the space behind the wing backs and pull the CB's out wide gaps should appear and we should rack up the FKs too. Our recent shape of 4 4 2 with midfielders across the middle 4 should handle their wing backs and allow the 2 wing men the latitude to make those runs.

So what could go wrong......... well, our tendency to give the opposition freebies with dumb mistakes might be one thing. Neither of our wingers have been that great at running into the channels - the spaces behind the wing backs. Wilf prefers to just get the ball to his feet wherever he is and leave it up to him to turn etc. Andros prefers to run at them from deep. They will both work hard but won't naturally exploit those spaces.

They have 3 good CBs aerially and if Benteke does start I think they won't be phased and TBH his finishing this season underlines that. So I would (surprising myself even) leave Benteke on the bench.

Speroni

Fosu-Mensah Tomkins Sakho Ward

Loftus Cheek - Luka - Cabaye - Macca

Townsend - Zaha

Don't see the point in changing the keeper following Saturday's disaster but I am really worried about Speroni's distribution which is worse than his last extended spell. Defenders are having to take the ball from him because his kicking is both short and horribly inaccurate.

Timbo is our best RB and has the pace to cope with the winger. Can't believe he hasn't been playing TBH. Tomkins to come in because he is better for the bruising battle with Choupo ahead. Tonka edges it over Dann although Scott has been in better form of late.

Ward at LB because he is sadly our best LB. Shaq is not easy. Schlupp has to be fair had 2 better games but I would still play safe with Joel.

Midfield picks itself and the only reason to adjust it would be if Benteke started. Cabaye for me has been awesome this season and showing the best form and fitness we have seen from him. He seems to have got over some of those long term injuries he was carrying etc.

Wilf and Andros up front but with instructions to get into those spaces.

The above is what I would do, I expect Roy to stick with the same team as last week.
Agree with playing TFM because he is the better right back for attacking, and we are at home. I'd personally go with Tomkins over Dann but it won't happen. Disagree that Ward is a better left back than Schlupp or PVA. I think PVA will play if fit as Roy likes him. I like him too, he's a decent footballer - certainly far superior in that regard when compared to JW and JS - and a good attacking left back.

Agree also with what you are saying about Townsend and Zaha getting in behind their full backs and starting in wide positions. They have had joy doing that before. My theory for the reason our home form has improved under Roy is because we haven't been playing a target man so we have had to play it out from the back and into midfield. (Last season we were too direct going straight up to Benteke at any opportunity which made us predictable at best, and completely blunt if we are brutally honest, because long 70 yard balls are easy to deal with.) The trade off is we will see mistakes, like the error from Dann/Speroni last week, but it should give us more of a foothold in games if we can eradicate them.

However I disagree with you because I would like to see Benteke return. He is a goalscorer if given decent service. His record proves that. If we want to score he is a better option up front than Andros "no goals" Townsend. The key is to still try to play football, even if CB does start. So no 70 yard passes straight up to him from the defenders on a regular basis. Let's play through the midfield. You talk about AT and WZ winning free kicks, but that's pointless without an aerial threat. (Although the quality of our free kick delivery makes that almost irrelevant anyway.) Another reason I'd play Benteke is to defend their set-pieces.

So in conclusion, whilst I advocate Zaha and Benteke up front in a 4-4-2 normally, in this game I would play a 4-3-3 (a genuine 4-3-3):

-------------------------------Speroni--------------------------------------
TFM------------Dann--------------------------Sakho---------------PVA
-------Cabaye------------------Luka--------------------RLC--------------
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------Townsend-------------Benteke--------------Zaha----------------

To get the best out of RLC we have to play him behind Benteke not on a wing where he's wasted

RLC is better driving with the ball from deep in my opinion, behind Benteke he won’t be involved in the game as much but I agree it’s also pointless playing him on the wing

taking into consideration speronis error last week and that benteke will play (he will be on the end of his clearance kicking (poor old jules cant reach the half way line) I look to be the only person who thinks Hennessey will be back. id also consider dropping dann because I think Tompkins compliments sakho better however with the possibility of crouch playing at some point in the game I would persevere with scott.
I prefer mensah to ward but he had a reasonable game v everton but is a bad game away from being dropped.
where to play cheek.......? well it aint on the wing nor would I put wilf through the middle.............
