Nothing like a baptism of fire. This decision should have been made a couple of months ago before the Windies series.

The fact that Bopara's only out for 'personal reasons' suggests that this wasn't planned and would not have normally been made.

It protects Ravi, a good one day player.

& gives Taylor a chance to stake a claim.

I thought he was slightly unfortunate to miss out to Bairstow for the windies series.

Maybe. It is a useful excuse though.

That said, and even though i have probably been James Taylor's most vocal supporter on here, if you are going to / have to make a change mid way through and important series I can see the logic in going with a solid experienced pro rather than a young, albeit hugely talented kid. See the debut of Trott, J. Maybe I would have gone with someone like Hildreth here.

Now I am well aware of similar decisions working just fine. See the decision to give Pietersen, K. his debut against Australia rather than picking Thorpe.

Really I am just annoyed that Taylor wasn't picked against the West Indies as I suspec that had that happened we would not be having this discussion.

Interesting snippet from the BBC website article on England's No 6 slot:

Keeper Matt Prior normally bats at seven but averages 45.66 in 17 innings at six (2009-12), higher than his overall Test average (42.54)

That is surely that for Ravi Bopara, surely that's that, surely?

He needs some time away from the Test squad so he can go back to Essex and work on his personal reasons.

There is more to it than that.

It was only 12 matches, the first two were against a poor West Indies team, and another was against Bangladesh. Clearly one could get away with it against weak opposition. The last two were on flat Sri Lankan tracks. Again one can get away with it there. So that leaves seven matches. One of those was India when Trott was off the field and came in at 7 (so really shouldn't be counted. Another was against Pakistan, again Trott was off the field and came in at seven.

The other five were against Australia last time out at home. And this counts. But guess who came in at seven in that series. Yep, Freddie. Broad at eight and Swann at nine. So pretty reasonable protection. And he averaged 32.

Now I know 5 matches is the definition of a small sample size, but we don't have anyone like Freddie coming in at seven in this series.

He's not a test six and we should stop thinking that he is, especially when we are facing arguably the best bowling attack in world cricket on pitches that are more likely than most to assist them. Next game is Leeds, right?

England Test squad for India: Alastair Cook (Essex, capt), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire), Ian Bell (Warwickshire), Tim Bresnan (Yorkshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Nick Compton (Somerset), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Graham Onions (Durham), Eoin Morgan (Middlesex), Monty Panesar (Sussex), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Matt Prior (Sussex, wk), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Graeme Swann (Nottinghamshire), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire).

Seriously lacking in depth and experience. The KP situation is very sad, especially with an Ashes summer ahead. My gut feel is we'll get bashed up in India then KP will be heralded back in for the Aussies - he'll love that and hopefully loads of runs for Surrey beforehand (assuming he doesn't get called up for the two New Zealand tests in May).

Even though it was good (though I don't like the forehand swats that still go for 6), there is a more appropriate thread for this!
