Stop winding each other up. I expect there's a number that don't even consider the question just give any answer to get rid of the phone/nuisance interviewer.

Don't know covers; don't care, go away, leave me alone, it does indicate the don't know.

Don't get the idea you're boring, you're just as entertaining as Biggin.

I understand the need for documentation, otherwise you will get people taking the pee.

But from what Iíve read today, it does sound like these rules have been excessive.

Two cases mentioned in this thread, for example, are people who arrived as children. Surely thereís a record of them attending a school back in the 60s? Their local council should know.

Iíd have thought that, plus many years evidence of PAYE or NI contributions since then would be sufficient? Itís quite easy to check on your payments...I did it with my NI number on the govt website.

You don't think it's a little outrageous that a long-time British citizen should be asked to prove he's a British citizen?

Dealt with them, very long winded but surprisingly easy to deal with. Certainly in comparison to the Home office

Amber Rudd should bin May blunderers policies. Those with relatives from, for example, Jamaica should get better access for their family members.

not to bring everything back to brexit BUT.

one of the main arguements from Pro-Brexiters was that freedom of movement negatively impacted relationships and migration possibilities for commonwealth countries.

Isn't that then catagorically destroyed by the fact Theresa May's home office was shredding legislation years ago.

Yes but to be fair to May she was building on the rancid anti immigrant propaganda pioneered by New Labour with the ‘bogus’ asylum seeker scares. They thought they were so clever triangulating to the racists. To see these types posing as the friends of immigrants today is sick making.

So the rules and policy set in place by our Prime Minister, then Home Secretary, and enacted by our current Home Secretary, have resulted in British Citizens being denied work, losing their homes, wrongly detained, seperated from their families and wrongly deported. Where is the culpability?

This is the state aggressively acting against its own people and I don't think an apology is enough.

To prove they are living in the country legally, people in this situation must currently apply for No Time Limit (NTL) status at a cost of £229.
They must provide documentation for every year they have been in the country, which can include payslips, bank statements and educational or medical records".

Why is it outrageous?

Iíve often been asked to do so, in fact I had to show my passport for official reasons today, and it wasnít to do with travel.

You canít just say ĎIím a British citizení and expect that to be accepted as true because you say so.

However, I do have sympathy that these current rules are putting onerous demands on the Windrush generation and think they should be helped to create the paperwork they need.

They should have been given the ****ng paperwork AND it should have been recorded by the govt 1970/1 as the act came on - NOT put the onus on people nearly 50 years later.

May brought it in as Home Secretary the new hard regime - she is an utter ****.

We live in a hard-faced, mean and bitter country. Awful times.

If only what these poor people are being asked to do was as simple as to show their passport!
It's a total disgrace!

Under what circumstances were you asked to prove your citizenship if you don't mind me asking?
Was it based on color and race? Because that, in simple terms, is what is happening here.

Surely, there must be a simple solution for the home office to accept that the citizens in question have been here for years without needing to prove for every individual year? National insurance, income tax, passport, employers, pension contributions, driving licence, medical records, utility bills, mobile phones, council tax, child benefits, dole etc. The government should appoint individual case workers to look at and obtain documentation and set a very low threshold e.g one of the above and then close the case, confer definite citizenship rights and ensure they haven't lost out on pension entitlements or anything else.
