Bruce Springsteen: any good?

I've noticed that there's a new boxed set of all his albums from 1973-84 (being Greetings from Asbury Park, The Wild the Innocent & E St. Shuffle, Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Nebraska, Born in the USA) just released which would be an extremely cheap way of purchasing his apparently 'classic' period work.

The trouble is, apart from his handful of big hits from that period, I know next to nothing about Springsteen's music. Now obviously one way to find out would be buy it, but I'm loath to risk being lumbered with seven albums of shouty gravel-voiced bombast. (Which would not be my cup of tea at all.)

Is that what he's really like? Is this boxed set worth a punt?

All fantastic stuff, get it. Ignore the Born in the USA flag waving, the sparseness of Nebraska is brilliant and Darkness on the Edge has one of the greatest Springsteen tracks ever "Racing in the Street"

Yeah Nebraska is great. And he has nice guitars.

All the albums are different. Born to Run is maybe the most "shouty voiced bombast" to some (but is probably in my fave 3 albums of all time), but is still a modern classic. The first two albums are raw and very New York street in style, then Darkness and The River have the bleak feel of the mid 80's recession years. Nebraska is stark and quite tough (mostly just voice and acoustic guitar), while underneath the mis-interpreted rah rah Born in the USA is full of damning indictments of the state of America.

The box set is a must if you have never got into Springsteen, while if you want the live experience go for Live in NYC DVD or album and listen to tracks like Out in the Street, Land of Hopes and Dreams.

As Maidstoned recommends, get it. There are so many tracks on those albums that are better than the more famous 'big hits' which everyone knows.

Looked this up myself as part of my vinyl to CD consolidation!! My favourite will always be 'Darkness on the Edge of Town' and as ME implies Racing in the Street is probably worth the entrance money (currently available for £11.99 at Amazon) on its own.

In my opinion he is very overated.

Is the correct answer

Treat youirself to "The Promise" while you are it, double album of tracks that didn't make it onto Darkness at the time. Few duff ones but majority are worthwhile.

I'm not a huge springsteen fan, but I always thought that song was misunderstood for the most part. Ballboy brings out the lyrics quite well in this cover.

Agree with that. Best way to enjoy Springsteen is to chop out his cheesey mid-80's middle of the road rock then put his early and later stuff together. Sit back and enjoy. Lovely.

Yes, they are misunderstood, however it is probably the one album that people think of when you mention The Boss, for the wrong reasons.
