Essentially it's the idea that there's a limited range, or window, on the political spectrum within which ideas have to fall if the public will accept them.

Neo-conservatives became very interested in the idea of shifting the window (which in the US wasn't far enough right for them). The idea being that by proposing ideas well outside the window, even though they'll be rejected, you can over time acclimatise the population to more extreme ideas and thus shift the overall position of the window.

Load of bollocks IMO but parts of the hard-left have bought into it too, as they think the window is too far right.

Luckily that "limited range or window" is closing fast for Labour. Time to focus on Labour and their in fighting and disunity. No wonder cr is desperate for an election asap. 3 months down the line we will have a good idea of who is really in charge of the party, and it wont be pretty or electable.

Personally I think that anyone who believes that Labours policies can be supported on the way that they said they would fund it has math skills as good as Diane Abbots, but hey the current party and current leader is unpopular so anyone who votes for them is an idiot.

basically The Overton window is the concept of what is considered acceptable policy positions on which a mainstream party can fight an election, Labour broadened the left side a good amount and UKIP broadened the right side a fair amount, I don't think you could have had one without the other, but I think it's less of a pendulum effect and more of a widening of debate generally.

Like I think the window tends to widen in times of uncertainty.

It's really sad how people read posts only in the way they want to, but not surprising on here I guess.

My point is simple - if you vote for someone because you think they're amusing/funny, then you're an idiot. That matters not as to which side of the coin that candidate falls. Do you disagree with that?

This suggests that most of your social circle is Labour.

For me the change in fortunes was down to accessibility. As a member of the public if you wanted to go and listen to Corbyn you could just turn up at any of his rallies. For May you had to be an invited party activist or rely on Laura Kuensberg's reporting.

Personally, I went to a JC rally in Gateshead. I would have gone to any other part leaders speeches if it was permissible.

It won't be permissable for ever once JC is in charge, there won't be any other parties let alone leaders of them, or any other opinions come to that. The gulag will finally set us free from BBS General Chit Chat.
