How often would we get 40k a season ? even in the Premiership it would probaly be around 6 games the rest will be under 30k .
W have seen crowds of high 30000's in Div 4 and three. 40000 plus in Div 2 several times and one of 50000 plus as well as 30000 plus a number of times.

In the first division 69-70 we had many gates 40000 plus and several when 49000 was the official figure but people at those games will tell you that without doubt in reality it was 50k plus.

Despite a continued four year struggle 60-70 our attendances averaged between 29 and 32k sadly only in 1979/80 could we match those averagesas from 1981 we were severly hampered by the Sainsbury's development, the early Ron years when all sorts of issues crated very low figures, ground redevelopment, all seating etc etc

Its true that the core fan base of the late 60's early 70's has moved on and many traditional Palace supporting families have moved away from the catchment area. However the premier league offers us a perfect vehicle to rebuild the fan base and a successful South London team should in time have no problem filling a 45 -50k stadium, even bigger.

Our best average was 29,000 .
We haven't a hope of averaging 35k let alone 40k when Chelsea built their stadium and improved on the pitch we lost the future generations to them .
Even Wimbledon managed to Average 18k at Selhurst in the premiership , The attraction is the big clubs not Palace to the tourists . Other than the burnley game all of the matches you mention included 10k plus away fans , I know I went , I have seen the Whitehorse full and half the holmesdale with away fans in it . Palace was a place that the big clubs fans could guarantee to turn up on the day and get in .

I am not, racey80 said that we could barely sell 30k which is nonsense

We could easily be averaging 35k a game in 10 years time if we kept ourselves in this league. Didn't we used to get bigger crowds than Chelsea? Things change. Sometimes people with vision engineer change.

When we played Man Ure first game in the old first division we got 48000 crowd. There were a good 10k of them that day and most London derbies were similar as there were no restrictions in those days we had opposing fans scattered all round the ground.

We certainly won't have a hope of averaging 35- 40k if we don't build it! Apart from the fact that we will get what the board want making, our own wishes immaterial,at this moment in time any improvement is good news.

Our all-seater stadium that has a maximum capacity in the low 20,000s is never going to return to ‘pay on the gate’ for the biggest Prem matches.

There’s only a few thousand tickets available, so they’d be sold that morning and everyone else shut out in the streets.

That old ship has sailed.

I would disagree with the average gate figures I recall clearly at the end of 70/71 season our average was just under 32k which put us in the top 10 of the first division and talk was then of how big we could get if we stayed in div 1. With regard to 10k away fans in our big gates. There was never 10k Middleborough fans in the 43000 on Good Friday 1969 and don't forget the next day we had around 36k at the Pompey home game. Nearly 80000 fans in just over 24 hours. The final home game that season we had high 30000's for Fulham and I can't recall seeing a Fulham fan there.

Also in reverse think about for example the Chelsea Palace 5th round FA cup game at the Bridge in 1976 huge 50k plus crowd there was a massive Palace attendance so it works both ways. We have always had good turn outs for semi and cup finals as well.

Offer the capacity at reasonable prices and we can fill a much bigger stadium. Selhurst with 40 plus thousand was a great place to be back in the day
