How could such a great attacking player be such a dull negative manger?

First time I saw Taylor was away to Oxford and he was brilliant, hit the post several times and tore them apart. He told me on way home that he had lost over half a stone in his first week as Allison made them work so hard. Don Rodgers missed one, one on one in his career and that was Bob Wilson's ankle having sent him the wrong way...legend

Question, it was said that bringing footballers from around the world would improve our game, has this had the opposite effect? hence we don't see the old fashioned center forward or play a sweeper anymore, was these our previous strengths as a footballing nation or do we now play our football to much like Europeans? and no longer have the skills to play a different game or type of football. |

I don't think so, styles and systems evolve and for teams to be able to play against other sides that have altered from the standard, managers and coaches usually amend their own team system to account for the change.
My memories of watching Palace under Malcolm Allison were that Big Mal was a manager who would adapt and change team formation from game to game - the away win over Leeds in the 1976 FA Cup 4th Round was possibly his finest example of outwitting a great side (Leeds had been narrowly beaten, some say cheated, in the 1975 European Cup Final with the same players and manager that faced Palace) - as long as you have a tactically smart manager and players of sufficient skill and adaptability, you can alter shape during matches - it's not something that is exclusive to present day football.

Just watched this again, absolutely brilliant. In my top 10 Palace matches I wish I had attended.
Have Palace had a better right winger than Taylor? Can't really count Lombardo as he was a wide midfielder. I'm not sure Palace have had a coach with more tactical nous than MA.

So nice to see a bit of PT at his best. He really was a joy to watch.

As they say at the end, we thoroughly outplayed Leeds, just about all of whom were internationals. It was never a hang on and hope affair. The two bits that i can still see today is the Taylor nutmeg on Frank Gray - this summed up our superiority. And the Ian Evans header from the PT cross. This was right in front of where i was standing and how David Harvey stopped it i will never know.
Great to hear Big Mal at the end of the clip too.

Great footage, the team worked in tandem, Taylor was a great player, its a shame we don't hear more about him. I never hear what a legend he was, it's seems to be always the same names popping up, I also like watching footage of Don Rogers !!

Probably the greatest player ever at the art of winning the ball back with a slide tackle and getting up and going for goal again. Would it be illegal nowadays? Best forward I ever saw play for Palace. Pity alot of the spirit seemed to be knocked out of him by the time he became our manager.

That move at about 4:10 between Swindlehurst, Cannon, Whittle and Taylor looks like something Spain would do

I am sure given a different chairman and a different set of circumstances we would have seen a different style from PT. The Palace job was one he always wanted, its just the chance came at the wrong time.

Shirt swap
There was an occasion when Peter kept skinning some poor 3rd-division full-back down the wing. The defender's only answer was to keep pulling Taylor's shirt. After enduring an hour or so of this, with an exasperated gesture, Peter took the whole shirt off and handed it to the full-back. Very funny.
He had a great sense of humour. Also those Norman Wisdom impressions for which he was famous. Excellent. |
