The last few days have reaffirmed my belief in the character of the players. To win last night in such tough circumstances is testament to their desire to work for each other and keep going in adversity.

Well done lads, super performance in the second half. Put your feet up for a couple of days and then go again at Brighton.

Because we made tactical changes that worked and this was combined with a determination to win
All that is down to a manager the players love (Hennesy’s words not mine) and who is calm, experienced and a very good manager

Uncle Roy’s red and blue army

Andros carried it quickly forward with a lot of movement in front of him he picked out the channel run from Sako who took defenders with him but intelligently played it back to Andros early. Andros with everything in front of him picked a simple ball to Luka who was right up with play and unmarked 20+ yards out but with a lot to do still albeit without a DM etc in sight. He just hit it first time, firmly but with accuracy and it curled beautifully into the corner with McCarthy stranded.

Where their midfield had gone, nobody knows but who cares. The space Andros and Luka had was criminal. A thing of beauty in a fairly awful match on an awful pitch. Very much out of place. Even the celebration was amazing
Spot on, great team goal. Just to add the Southampton defence and midfield were clustered around Benteke and watching for Wilf's run into the box. The space for Luka was created by the attacking players making the runs they needed to do and sticking to their job. Considering everyone must have been knackered it shows great commitment. Wilf had started the move forward but was in the box when it finished. Benteke having been involved in at the beginning was making a nuisance of himself and they over committed as expected the Townsend ball to be the cross not the pass.

Still that Luka could find that space shows our players were working harder than their players. Even though we had a day less and the team had worked extremely hard against City. "We wanted it more" is a cliche but in this instance it was true.

In the dying days of Pardew we were the team being out fought

First half was pretty dire. Both teams were pretty poor (we were just a tad worse than them!).

Second half, we got better as the game went on and 2-1 was kind on them given the chances we had. Sako made a huge difference when he came on.

Also, maybe it was just me but Benteke looked a different player in the final stages of the game.

TFM 5 Below par

Zaha 8 A constant threat
Cabaye 4 Awful further forward
Milivojevic 7 Ok, but gets an extra point for the winner
McArthur 7 Brilliant finish, I felt he was poor (5) in the first half and sublime in the 2nd half (9)
Townsend 7 Great engine throughout. Another assist.

Benteke 8 MOM Worked his arse off, even tracking back in the full back position. Shots on target, held it up well, clever header for equaliser.

Subs:

PVA 7 pressed very hard from left mid. That was the start of swinging the game back to us.
Sako 8 Deserves to start the next one. Worked so hard. So hard. And he has pace and strength. Probably the fittest he's ever been in his life. Roy has done wonders with him.

Hodgson's first half effort of 4-5-1 was a big mistake. It was a very poor Southampton team we were playing, not a record-breaking champions elect side like Man City. We gave them far too much respect. When we switched to 4-4-2 the passing was less ponderous and we gradually got in the game. Subs swung it. Benteke and Zaha are a real handful as a strikeforce. Onwards and upwards. No more 4-5-1 please Roy.
Explain to me why Kelly is not a Premier league player?

How did Luka only do OK? He’s winning MOTM on this poll. His technique for the goal was out of this world, plus he run himself into the ground.

Benteke MOTM!!!!??? Is this a joke and I’ve fallen for it? He did not get a great deal of service but he hardly put himself about.

Makes me relieved I chose the Travelodge in Soton.
Couple of Saints fans on the table next to me in the Curry house said thanks for the result because it will accelerate the sacking of their manager. They were dreadful in the second half but that shouldn’t detract from our performance on a shocking and probably dangerous pitch.

2 of the top 6 and and away game at a ground we have never won a top flight game in the space of 6 days.

4 points and possibly unlucky not to have had 7!

Think a lot of expectations were around 0-1 - certainly times to be positive.

I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean, how did we turn it around second half after a poor 1st?

We were superb second half and we deserving of all three points.

Brighton's on Monday was in a similar condition (arguably worse)

Very poor to see pitches in the Premier League in such an awful state.

Was strange to see last night as Southampton traditionally have one of the better pitches in the league.

Love the fact we are turning losses into wins. We looked knackered after the City game in the first half. Second half subs brilliant. Tomkins was great throughout the game.

Someone mentioned earlier that palace directors buggered up bringing in FdB. Only fair that they get praise for going for Hodgson as well. He has been fantastic. Love him!

FDB was third choice after Dyche and Pellegrino. Seems that SP knew he made a mistake even as the season was starting.

I thought Southampton looked very good in the first half. They cut us open a few times and probably should have had more than the one goal. We looked like a side that had just run itself into the ground a couple of days before. In the second half we dominated and they faded really badly. I couldn’t really work that out although the subs improved us no end. I think Van Aanholt must be our preferred left back now. Sako was immense and they couldn’t deal with him. The fact that they we were getting wet throughout the game made me think that the wind was blowing towards our goal and it certainly seemed easier for both sides to kick towards the away end. When both sides are knackered maybe that helped us. Think Hennessey will be number 1 going forward now - he has had 2 good games following Speroni’s errors against Arsenal. We just need to pray that we don’t get an injury to either Tomkins or Kelly before Sakho comes back. Tomkins MOM for me.

I could only watch the extended highlights on sky last night but it looked as though we were on top second half. Some observations - though hard to tell from the highlights:

- so pleased for Luka, what a lovely strike that was. He's one of my favourite players - gives everything and is a good player too.
- Townsend seemed very lively and was constantly on the ball but more centrally at times.
- Sako looks like a man reborn. He is resembling the player we thought we had bought three years ago. He's ungainly at times but a menace and he looked to be the difference when he came on. Another important cameo.
- set pieces - seems we couldn't beat the first man often again. We need to improve on these.
Benteke - there was a lovely turn and shot from him second half that - for the first time in ages - reminded me of the player Villa had. Really hope he can kick on next game. Needs a goal - ideally to win the Burnley game.

It's a massive three points and a good return for our Christmas games. The players deserve a lot of credit for physically playing at that level twice in 48 hours. Ridiculous premier league scheduling but we've come through it.

If he was driving one of his sports cars, that was a bit silly of him as I imagine the visibility isn’t great in those.

Even though I had our 4WD Audi, there were a few moments when the conditions meant we had limited traction. Slow and steady by all should be everyone’s decision. We got home at 12.15, which isn’t that bad considering we stayed to celebrate with the players at the end and then had a long walk to our car park.

Well done lads, super performance in the second half. Put your feet up for a couple of days and then go again at Brighton.
Yep, spot on. Their determination/character was being questioned by many earlier in the season (lack of leaders after losing the core of the promotion team), but they have really proved their mettle. Last night was a seriously gutsy performance - coming from a goal down to win in the pouring rain and wind, 2 days after a very hard game is really, really impressive. As a club, our recent history shows we do best when our backs are to the wall and I'm really happy and proud the current players are carrying that on.

Parked on the other side of the Itchen Bridge, and it was a bit hairy walking over it with the high winds, and occasional lashing rain, but didn't mind in the slightest having seen us win!!

Came off the M3 at Winchester and drove the A31 the Alton, Farnham, Guildford route. It was pretty quiet and a lot of it is two lanes so you can take it steady in such conditions, it was worst between Guildford and Dorking on the A25 though, most of the standing water was by the kerb/gutter, but every now and then there was a ridiculous huge puddle you just hit before you could see it! Funny now, but at the time a very lively drive to say the least!

Hennessey 7 - Solid performance, looks more confident, kicking is so much better than Speroni.

Schlupp 7 - Strong, did well to force their winger inside and stopped crosses. Nobody seemed to give him any options for the throw ins.
Tomkins 7 - Our best defender by some distance this season.
Kelly 5 - Long seemed to win every header against him (despite being a foot shorter) and Long lost him for their goal.
TFM 6 - Some nice runs forward but looked a bit at sea when they passed the ball aroudn him.

Zaha 7 - Not his best game. Some decent runs, but his 'end product' was off today. Missed a sitter to seal the game. Seemed to be focussing on staying on his feet.
Cabaye 6 - First time we've looked better when he's gone off - looked knackered. Didn't do a lot wrong. Felt our central midfield were missing when they got those two early chances.
Milivojevic 8 - Excellent performance capped by a magnificent gal.
McArthur 8 - Worked really hard. He's our only player who seems to get these sort of 'right place right time' goals.
Townsend 7 - Seemed smarter than Wilf today, good decisions. Linked up midfield to attack well.

Benteke 8 - Understated but excellent performance. Great assist. They couldn't cope with him. Couple of ropey touches, he just needs a couple of goals and more confidence.

Subs:

PVA 7 - going 442 changed the game. PVA supported Schlupp well - I think we should keep him.
Sako 9 MOM - great cameo. The catalyst for the win. Looks a different player of late. Some great runs, touches, and showed maturity in playing the game out.

Roy 9 - got it wrong in the first half, turned it around in the second. I love the bloke.

Ref 7 - seemed to let a lot of firm challenges go, and didn't go OTT with the yellow cards.

Palace fans 9 - awesome away support.

Saints fans 2 - One song, and leaving on 81 mins in a six pointer when you're only a goal down?!!!
