Danny Butterfield: Not Just a Hat-trick

Have to say another wonderful and compelling interview on the Eagles Player comprised by Chris Grierson.
Well worth a watch!

I always liked Danny Butterfield at GTFC.

He graduated from our youth team but struggled to establish himself as THE right back at the Club because we had Club-legend John McDermott already. McDermott was potentially one of the best and most consistent right backs to play outside of the Prem and played over 700 games for us over 20 years.

So when you're following that, or standing in for that, you'll always be compared whether you like it or not. That's not to say he didn't do well. He did. He didn't have the athleticism to be a marauding full back but was an intelligent footballer.

Under Lennie Lawrence he had a spell in central midfield for us, including our cup win at Anfield in 2001, and his vision and ability to play a pass was useful there. What held him back maybe at times in midfield was what a section of people always held against him, - a lack of bite/aggression.

I remember him pulling the strings in our 5-2 win over you guys at our place in 2002(ish) which I think prompted you to sign him. The funny aspect of your signing of him is that we missed out on getting a fee because of our own incompetence at the time. He was out of contract so obviously you signed him on a free transfer. But because of his age at the time, we'd have been due compensation if we had offered him a new contract equal to or better than his existing deal. We didn't, I assume because we knew he was on his way, but when this came out in local news later it was an embarrassing move to make.

Thanks for that Tommy. He'll always be a Palace hero thanks to that unbelievable hat-trick and his involvement during the administration and fight for survival. Hope Danny is at today's game.

Another Palace legend signed from Grimsby, you will probably have to be aged over 75 to remember the other one, Freddie Kurz, probably our first post war hero, scoring plenty in some difficult seasons for Palace after WWII.

Very solid player for us for many years and he always seemed a down to earth guy too. Went about his job quietly and solidly for a long time and also had a decent career even after leaving.

Don’t forget his involvement in the promotion season. Was one of our standout players including scoring a cracking goal in the PLayoffs against Sunderland.

I was going to make the same point about his role in the promotion season - as you say, he was one of the stand out players. Thought, to be fair, the play off goal took a massive deflection.

Unfortunately for Danny, he got a serious injury in pre-season which, combined with the form of his replacement Emerson Boyce, meant he hardly featured in the top flight.

I remember the injury, it was away to QPR in a friendly, which as you say, coincided with us signing Boyce, who turned out to be a very good replacement, but you have to wonder if the injury robbed Danny B from making his name at Premier League level. Not sure if anyone else agrees, but he reminded me alot of Marc Edworthy both in looks and ability, both very good signings from lower leagues, the type we don't seem to make anymore?

Interesting about his comment about the team spirit and his mates then George Burley 'ripping the spine' out of the team.

Felt very sorry for Danny re injury as he really deserved a crack at top flight . Only thing is imo Boyce defensively was on another level and then some. Remember my old stepson wanting to say hello to him at Brum away 1-0 AJ iircc, and as we chatted it was clear a fit again Danny had the right hump at not playing but how could you drop Boyce?. That hatrick though will live long in the memory.

Nice interview. Brings back many memories and emotions. The way he was treated when he left was appalling. Imagine being on holiday and getting told you are no longer required. Awful.

I believe that’s how Steve Kember found out he was sacked the first time round by Ron Noades.

Kember must be one of the only managers in history to be sacked from the same club by two different owners.

Here's the 5-2 DB alludes to in the interview. I guess I must have been pissed off at the time but an interesting watch now.

For me, he was a true Palace hero (you can see it in the interview) and I wish him all the best.

One of my proudest moments of The Butterfield hatrick is seeing my boy celebrating one of the goals with his 2 mates in close up via Sky cameras.
