Easy to take a train to Salem of witches fame, whale watching also very possible and unforgetable. Easy city to walk around, friendly people and some of the best shopping and seafood anywhere. One of the few US cities with real history and decent beer. Take a look at Harvard, cool area.

Agree with own goal - take a train out of Boston to Salem and Plymouth. I spent a weekend in Boston and although I thought it a pleasant enough place, I would personally find it hard to fill 5 days.

In August, I would try and take a drive up to Maine, perhaps to see some colours changing? Also, definitely head down to Cape Cod. Some amazing scenery around there.

The Heritage Trail is good. Why not pop into Harvard? Nice to look around. Take a duck thingy and drive around the city and along the water that's good for a tour.
