Should have been 4-0 at half time. After the break, Weds came back into it, but even still Palace had four or five clear cut chances. Crap ref. turned down blatant penalty before equaliser. After full time you just knew it wasn't our night and the rest is history.

Clarke - 7
Smith (inj) - 8
Popovic - 6
Vickers - 7
Mullins - 6
Gray - 8 (going forward) 5 (defensively)
Rodger - 7
Aki - 5
Kirovksi - 5
Freedman - 5
Morrison - 7

I'll let someone else do it this time

Overall though we were poor - we really conspired to bring about our own defeat, rather than being outplayed. Some of our players looked tired, dis-interested or off form (Dougie).

We should have really wrapped it up long before Wednesday (who were poor again but grew in confidence as the game went on ) got a sniff of goal, as we missed five or six really good chances in front of goal that so far this season we'd been putting away.

Can't say I'm overly worried though - just disappointed that rather than being outplayed in anyway, we shot ourselves in the foot !

I would rather though win games in the league - carrying on again this Saturday I hope.

Nice club shop there BTW (first time I'd ever approached the ground from that end) - can we have one like that please Mr Jordan !?

Clarke - not a great deal to do but caught well and made a couple of sharp saves. No chance for the second goal. Dived the right way a few times in the penalty shoot-out!

Smith - OK going forward but still not putting in decent crosses and Wednesday made quite a few breaks past him. A typical Smith performance, then.

Popovic - generally solid but prone to the odd positional lapse. Cannot take penalties.

Vickers - as per usual so effective he was barely noticed. Almost always in the right place at the right time. Offer him what he wants to stay here.

Mullins - excellent game at the back. Swept up on the few times we were troubled. My Palace MoM.

Gray - very good first half but, like most of the team, was fairly anonymous for most parts of the second. Needs to start putting in decent head-high crosses at speed.

Rodger - See comments for Gray.

Aki - Very subdued for the most part. Possibly the least effective display I've seen him put in for us.

Kirovksi - seems to be on a different wavelength to the rest of the team and gives the impression of drifting for large parts of the game. Missed a glorious opportunity in the first half.

Freedman - the doog was left chained to his kennel. Appeared to treat it as a training game.

Morrison - did a bit of running and got into good positions but will be hoping Mick McCarthy wasn't watching as he wasted three or four glorious chances.

Oops. Forgot the subs.

Black - livened us up a bit because he was willing to run at players. Doesn't seem to have the confidence to shoot when presented with a chance.

Deano - Tightened us up defensively on the right at the expense of going forward. Allegedly playing as a wing-back but I can't see that.

Hopkin - Played a few passes but seemingly affected by the same malaise that gripped the rest of the team.

Gray was poor attackingly - didn't have anything to do defensively so don't know where u get a poor rating for defending. He completed 1 cross out of 6 last night!

Clarke - not incredible amount to do. 2 decent saves. 7

Smith (inj) - did well coming inside when got ball but didn't get the ball where he wants it: wide right in crossing position. 7
Popovic - looked a bit clumsy, won most in air though. played 1 ball to julian gray in the whole match when there were probably 10 occasions when julian was free. 6
Vickers - rounded once or twice but pretty steady game. 7
Mullins - battled well . 7
Gray - first bad performance of season in my view. to be fair though he was left frustrated out wide with palace team-mates not picking him out. 5
Rodger - lucky free-kick, played simple balls well. 7
Aki - quiet. 6
Kirovksi - started well but once he missed that sitter was dreadful. 5
Freedman - got a bit of momentum going on and off. unfortunetly didn't get any chances unlike the other two strikers! 7
Morrison - poor. didn't do his job! had 3 sitters missed all. none of them were even good saves!! 5

subs:

Black - did all he could do. 7
Austin - normal showing. 6
Hopkin - shame he continued from where he left off in the reserve game (not good enough). 6

Managerial Staff - 5

Errors:
1) Playing Kirovski (admitidly this is with hindsight) but even though that mistake had been made he should have been brought off.
2) substituting freedman - had just started to give the attack some perpose after wednesday pressure. can't believe he could be subbed before either morrison or kirovski
3) they haven't purchased a stiker as we desparately needed a sub for clint.
4) aistin/popovic taking penalties.

THE VISIONARY is playing for a contract
I couldnt see why they took Dougie off, but overall it seemed a pretty lack lustre game. Some of the players had good spells, Morrisons cross from which Aki scored was good, but he had a nightmare in front of goal. And as for when the ref missed that handball, but would we have scored from the penalty.

Clarke kept smiling to the home supporters, and as someone said, Aki seemed really out of sorts. Mullins had a fairly good game, but really after a while they just seemed to sit back on their laurels. It wasnt that they looked dis-interested, more like knackered.

Oh well, now we can concentrate on the league, I really dont want a repeat performance of last season, dping well in a cup and crap in the league

Maybe he sees the league as more important than the mikey mouse cup. Freedman played a lot for Scotland the other week, Morrison and Kirovski sat on the bench.

Good decision in my oppinion - we don't need the cup as a distraction this year, especially if we want to push for the playoffs.

yup that is true.

then that makes mistake no 3) even more relevant! We need another striker!

It's a bit worrying - if we looked knackered on a Wednesday, 4 days after the international games (in which some of those who travelled didn't play, or not for long anyway) - how are we going to look on Saturday, 3 days after a game involving extra-time and a penalty shoot-out?

The one thing you need to be against Wimbledon, above all else, is committed - I fear another Millwall-type result.

Not saying your wrong or anything, but how come Julian got Star Man in the South London Press today. Also when I was listening to the match on the radio, Julian was mentioned alot so I got the impression he was really involved.

The SLP is pretty rubbish when it comes to reporting on Palace. Julian did do pretty well but his final cross tended to be poor. He's very much like Tommy in getting into good positions but failing to provide good service. Which is better than not being able to get into those positions, I suppose. It just gets a little frustrating to see him do all the hard work and not have anything produced at the end of it. A willingness to cut inside and drive for goal (and a decent right foot) wouldn't go astray either. Not being too greedy am I?

At times, he was very good going forward, and sitting in the Hillsborough main stand full of Shef. fans who were raving about him every time he got the ball, I thought he was our best player. Defensively though, he didn't back Mullins up on the left hand side enough for a wing back.

It seems that he enjoys going forward, and would prefer to play a more attacking role.

Agree totally.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this before, but our game went to pieces in the second half when Bruce pushed Kirovski further up front and played with three strikers. Probably thought about getting the killer goal and then substituting the internationals.

Didn't work though !!

He fit's in better with a 4-4-2 formation, but then theres no one to play behind him.

Before he came to Palace he used to play behind the strikers, and at some point of his career he was a striker.
