Anyone able to explain the Dolphins plan this off-season?

None of it makes sense to me.

The surprise isn’t that Kirk Cousins is getting lots of money. As the biggest name in a big market for free-agent quarterbacks, Cousins was bound to get paid this offseason. What’s notable is how he and the Vikings reportedly agreed to structure the deal, which cannot be signed until 4 p.m. (EDT) on Wednesday. The word is that Cousins’s contract will be for three years and worth approximately $84 million, all fully guaranteed.
He was offered more total money at other teams but took the higher guarantee with the shorter years.

As far as I can tell it goes like this....the Dolphins had some pro bowl players and expected to win with them as they did in 2016 (10-6). These pro bowlers instead did their own thing on the field and moaned off it. They also proved themselves to be poor leaders of the team despite being paid to lead. With these players (Suh, Pouncey, Ajayi, Landry) they went 6-10. So they're gone.

Cheaper replacements have been signed with a 'do your job' mentality ala New England. They're also supposed to be better 'leaders'. The Dolphins missed Tannehill badly last season and think that with his return they will return to winning ways. He is rated far more by the coaches/front office than he is by the rest of the league. Tannehill was having a very good 2016 season prior to his injury.

Its possible to make a case for their defense but they need better line backers. If Tannehill can improve on 2016 they should have a decent offense, but they need a TE and another RB. Aaron Rodgers would take this team deep into the play offs. But Tannehill isn't Rodgers.

In my opinion that's almost impossible. Their are 6 QB's that could conceivably go in the first round but only 4 of them are really thought of as first rounders. What's more 2 of the teams drafting 1-7 already have established QB's (Colts and Buccaneers) and the Browns have picks 1 and 4 and will be unlikely to draft two QBs with such high picks. The Browns, Jets and Broncos may well pick a QB. The Giants may also do so. Its possible that the Bills trade up to 4th, 6th or 7th in order to get the 4th QB or beat the Bronco's to the 3rd or 4th QB. But if 4 QB's are gone in the first four picks the Broncos, picking 5th won't use it on one of the remaining QBs. They would use their 5th over all pick on an elite player and trade up to get in the end of the 1st or use their pick in the 2nd rd on a QB since, with four teams with new QB's the competition will no longer be there. The only other teams in the top half that need QB's are the Dolphins and Cardinals - neither will trade up into the top 7 in order to pick a 2nd round QB. They may try and trade back to the end of the first where I see Jackson and Rudolph being reached for.

Cardinals wont go up for a QB having signed Bradford i would imagine. They need wide receivers desperately. Also probably a better back up Running Back to take the load off of David Johnson

Here's what I see happening with the first couple of picks;

1) Browns - Sam Darnold - Think this is a wrap. He'll sit behind Taylor at the start and they ease him in.

2) Giants - Saquon Barkley - If they do still believe in Eli, they have a pretty small window left to win with him. Barkley is a slam dunk hit and gives them a chance to win now.

3) Jets - Josh Rosen/Josh Allen - They HAVE to go QB. I know they have just re-signed McCown and also bought in Teddy B, but they may not get a better chance to draft a franchise QB this good for a while again.

4) Browns - Bradley Chubb - Put him on the other side to Miles Garrett. Wow.

Although, I would not be surprised to see the Bills reach out to either the Giants or Browns and look to trade up to get themselves into the top four, and give themselves a chance to get one of these QB's. Its too risky to wait at #11 and hope one falls to them. Unless they believe Baker Mayfield or Lamar Jackson is that guy...

Most intriguing draft in years.

The Jets have changed everything. Before their trade, there were some scenarios where the second QB didn't go until their pick at #6. Now, they just threw chum in the water. Every team that wants a QB knows that at least 2 will be gone by the #3 pick because the Browns can't afford to pass on one that they like at #1 anymore. (Of course, the Browns being the Browns, they'll probably find a way to screw this up) I think it's (at least) possible that QBs could be the first 4 picks. (The Browns would have to trade down to a team that wants to beat the Broncos to a QB) But I don't think a team trades into the Top 10 to get Lamar Jackson, so five QBs in the top 7 will be tough.

The more trades and QB's taken early doors the better; means either Minkah Fitzpatrick or Denzel Ward might fall to the Niners at #9.

It is intriguing and the first 10 picks will be defined by the Browns and Bills. The only way to guarantee the Bills get a QB is to trade into either number 2 or 4 - depending upon who they want and who they think the Browns and Jets will take.
I agree that the Giants will take Barkley but IMO Manning is done. When will they get as good a chance at drafting a QB? If the Bill's trade up to 6th it leave's the door open to Miami to trade into 4th (it would cost a lot) and beat them to a QB. At least two QBs will be going to the AFC east as Brady's career reaches its end. If the Giants take a QB and Barkley is available at 4 I doubt anything would make the Browns move from that spot. Which might be a problem for the Bills if they can't move above the Broncos in 5th - would they take a QB if one of the top four falls to them? They surely can't rely just on Keenum.
Whatever happens the teams in 6-12 are going to have some very good non-QB talent fall to them which is great for a team like the 49er's who got a quality QB for just a 2nd round pick.

That's how I see it. And the question is - which of these QB's is each team interested in? I wouldn't be surprised if the Jets could have got the QB they wanted at 6 anyway. They must think there's a good chance the Bills want the same guy and the Giants don't, otherwise why move up? Maybe they're happy to pick any of 3 QB's and/or Barkley at 3. If not they risk having given away all those picks and not getting the player they've targeted.

Either way, the value of the 4th over all pick depends upon who the Jets pick at 3 and whether Barkley is off the board. Depending upon the identity of the QB(s) available at 4 either the Dolphins, Cardinals, Broncos or Bills might be interested in moving up. I could see one or more of these teams not valuing a player like Mayfield that high. That might explain why the Bills have yet to move into the 2nd, 4th or 6th pick.

The Giants would be absolutely mental to take Barkley at 2 now.

They either go QB or they trade out to Buffalo or Denver (and in the case of Denver... still get Barkley).

This is the first draft in a while that has genuine excitement as there could be 6 QBs taken in the first round. There's a lot of depth at various positions as well.

If the Giants go QB at #2 (which is certainly a possibility), then you can see the Bills offering BOTH of their first round picks to the Browns to move up to #4. Bills certainly in a strong position to negotiate. Browns would then get a pick at #1, #12 and #22 (and as you say Paul, there is so much talent in this draft that the Browns could walk away from the first night with three nailed on future pro bowlers).

Problem Bills will have though is that Darnold, Rosen and Allen could be all gone by that point. Are you really going to give all that up to draft Mayfield at #4?

This might affect the Giants choice at #2.

Another blockbuster trade: Giants trading DE Jason Pierre-Paul and a 2018 fourth-round pick to Buccaneers for a 2018 third-round pick and a fourth-round pick, source tells ESPN.

Problem Bills will have though is that Darnold, Rosen and Allen could be all gone by that point. Are you really going to give all that up to draft Mayfield at #4?
Moving up to 4th overall will surely cost the bills more than their 12th and 22nd. Maybe one of their two 2nd rd picks too. If a QB the bills believe in is available by then it would be a good move for them. If Mayfield is available it will be intesting to see if the Broncos, picking 5th rate him and/or whether the Bills, Dolphins (who apparently love Mayfield) or Cardinals would be willing to trade up to 4th-6th for him.

Don't sleep on the Ravens or Saints trading up for a qb but I think they sit and wait on rudolph at the bottom of the first.

They way I see 5 going early is if Browns, Giants and Jets all take QBs then the Bills, Dolphins and Cardinals are all scrambling for the other 2.

No chance that Saints move up. Would cost them a fortune and would probably end up with only being able to reach Baker Mayfield. Could see them maybe taking Rudolph lower down though as you mentioned.

If I had to bet, I'll say the Browns take a QB, the Giants trade down with a team that takes a QB, the Jets take a QB and the Browns will be free to choose between Chubb, Barkley and Fitzpatrick at #4.
