I started a game as Venice. I got about 15 minutes in before I clocked that they can't have settlers.

It's bloody ace being able to buy City States and have loads of trade routes though.

Her indoors has told me off for playing too long last night though. It was only 11.00pm!

why on earth did i decide to buy this expansion at 11pm last night, not one of my best ideas.

anyhow, started a small game with a random leader, it gave me the Thais. got the Ethiopians as my closest neighbour with the babylonians some where else on a different land mass. Also got an undiscovered nation. knowing my luck it will be the Japanese or the Gerrmans.

trying to stay away from a Military nation and go with culture/tourism, but i have spotted one of Selassie's settlers roaming around where i want to expand into. if he settles in my way i will be left with no other option than to invade. they will probably be too stoned to notice my arrival.

You are both mugs, of the muggy variety.

I love you for it.

Am already planning my next defeat. Though I've resolved to play to the bitter end / redemption this time 'round

If I'm not the jerrys or the yellow peril, then I want to try being the venetian blind leading the latter.

Onwards upon yonder X axis, ye dogs!

P.s. Selaisse is a sweetheart, when he's on another continent. If you share a landmass with him, he's a half-time teamtalk with Steve Claridge.

Kill. Him. First.

I sir am the mug for buying the expansion pack from Amazon.
Needs to be installed through Steam, who refuse to recognise the code. Wankers. Both of them.

However fret ye not. BNW purchased in-game last night.
Now to go in search of a refund from Amazon. Go straight at 'em like a Mongol, or use more underhand methods like Siam?

The first paragraph of a Civ 5 review on Euro Gamer:

"I have lost count of the cups of tea that have gone to waste at Firaxis' expense. The Civilization 5 developer is responsible for dozens left half-finished and forgotten, their heat dissipating as the decades roll by and Leonard Nimoy's honeyed tones note the founding of another milestone in human history or landmark feat of ingenuity. Scores more have gone cold as the music from that Hovis advert induces a Zen-like state and centuries run into hours and millennia stretch into days."

Any one else able to relate to this delightful insight? I know I can.

Also CT_Palace: Go Mongol, this country wasn't conquered by harp players, it was won by Vikings! (I don't think that's true)

I will add my two penneth. I play on the fifth difficulty level, and the amount of times I have got to industrial era only to be ganged up on is ridiculous. But so am I for keeping on trying

I tried another game as the Japs and gone all out war. Problem is, where does the science come from if you have to go Mathematics (Courthouse) + Military tech route? The rate of conquest does not keep up with the other factions research. But if you go Pryamid, Hanging Gardens, Chicken Itza, etc then you leave yourself wide open fielding only Archers.

Grab too much land and your screwed. Don't take enough and you have no where to go.

How do you get GDP up? Is this just another measure of gold? I am always behind in this category. Also, is it best to specialise cities, or should all have gold and science buildings???

I find population is the key to gold and science, so build cities. Build build build! Build mines on every hill as soon as poss and link your cites with roads/harbours to create trade routes.
Even as the Japs, building a big army for conquest, a big population will look after your gold income and your science output by itself.
The only issue with this route is making sure you keep all them blighters happy, so make sure social policies/luxury trade/wonders/buildings are focused on creating happiness. Luxury trade for demand items particularly helps to keep every one happy - by the industrial age my cities are virtually all in "we love the king" (and so they should!!) mode increasing output of gold, science and growth.

Of course, now I have to learn anew with the all additions coming with Brave New World.

Why must I spread rep around before I give it to SE5eagle?!

This reeks of Communist Russia, I hope you don't employ the same tactics in your crusades SE5!

Oh, Consul Maz, my dearest advisor, CivV is real life.

The year is 1190 AD and I literally do not have a clue.

Not practically, not figuratively, not some swaddling of soiled metaphor;

I. Do. Not. Have. A. Scooby.

Here is the sum total of all I know:

I have sworn to fight to the bitter end this time. No self-immolation. No internecine genocide. No regicide. No buy-out clause. No chip pan fires. No Nothing.

Death or Glory.

In deciding this, I realised my populace needed to matter. Whatever the f'k that means anymore. Jesus Wept, I miss the Shoshone and their scouts.

So anyway, I chose the Celts. So help me God.

I figured that if my land was to be drenched in viscous blood, mine should puddle amongst it. Though I'll certainly poke Morrissey out onto the battlefield, with mine own George from Asda spear if necessary, just before the bawling crescendo. The divine right of kings and all. FFS*.

I am on a stringy island on a Large planet. To the North is the city-state of Zurich, a friendly, mercantile, shower, if ever there was one. To my south lies the state of Almaty. Irrational types, keep giving me unsolicited, frankly useless, gifts of dudes with big sticks, in return for the happy-go-lucky Taoism we've all been Jimmy Savile hug-juggling under.

I say "dudes with big sticks" for one simple reason. Though we're in the 12th Century, we haven't had an iron age here. To be honest, we haven't even had an equestrian age. If someone invited us to the olympics, then we'd all pile in, super-pumped, high fiving non-plussed stadium staff, with physios at the ready, for morris dancing or some shite.

We've f'k all except for woods, grassland and rocks.

I have a suspicion that we are fairly North on the globe, not North enough for snow and not South enough for deserts. Or rational success. I suspect.

I'm praying for oil reserves but at the mo, to be honest I just want my peeps to stop marrying goats and self-abusing in the hedgerows.

I was also hoping that it was an archipelago affair. But there's f'k all other islands to hop on around us, none of me and mine have found a drop of land in that endless ocean. We're beyond thirsty now. We spit only feathers.

No wonder we've all been riding cows in lieu of horses. Cheltenham is a mess. The Hindus love it to be fair.

Anyway, we have been happily building wonders like it's an OCD. I can't even name them all. I've housed writers and artists outside my cities, waiting for a theatre or museum to perform or hang their, allegedly terrific, works. We're not broke, we're not rich.

Just waiting to be invaded, or worst, befriended, by some giant superpower.

F'king hope they're not sitting on continents.

It could get messy otherwise.

*Murray.

Revision as of 1340 AD:

i)
Quote:

Due, of course, to the statutory cinque km cordon around any hedge school. Naturally. We don't want no Ian O'Huntleys here. We've enough problems, believe me; thx though.

ii) We are now actually broke. R&D is now subsequently compromised. Stiff letter written to AIB, faxed photocopy of corpulent bum received in response. Appropriately filed and documented.

iii) Oceans are now, as one types, being crossed. Due to (ii), it is by some Taoist priest and, though we gave him sequins to pritt-stick to his habit, he elucidated that it was "mainly heroin, but I'll take uppers on a boat too."

iv) We shall meet other civilisations soon.

v) In relation to (iv), we are expecting a response, specifically: "Go home paddy. Take sambo with you."

I am advised that we are completely on top of the situation.

That's a good feeling.

Oh great, blessed priest just met my old friend, Moctezuma.

He really will.

Good Palace friends.

Ostensibly it's schweet. I'm a tiny island with two continents astride me.

A random bunch of my Holies met a whole bunch of Foreigners. Make no mistake about that.

A lovelier congregation of (wo)men was never met. Even the 'robust' fella in the microskirt (I'm looking at you, Indonesia) was hospitable, if forward. Smashing bunch of (wo)men. Really. Even the tranny.

Then I bump into Isobella, whose Spanish Empire lies directly to my West. It didn't start well. Especially as I didn't realise that my envoys weren't priests, but spearmen (Almaty stirring it up again, pumping military units into my partay-industrial complex...)

My 'diplomats' were in the mood for dancing, romancing. Fair play, it had been a long journey.

Now, my new Spanish friends were welcoming; fine with spears being jovially jabbed on the dancefloor.

The 'white man overbite' was, however, another matter.

I accidentally declared war on Spain.

50 years of war against Spain ensued.

20 were taken up with them destroying my two squadrons of retreating party-goers, and a further 30 were consumed with me begging for forgiveness and everlasting peace. In vain, I thought.

Then eventually - unexpectedly - Spain ended rancour, by not only suing for peace, but by offering me one of their cities as part of the bargain.

I go to bed now befuddled, but safe in the knowledge that Barcelona is where it belongs... Beyond the pale.

Officially expansive and imperial are we, shockingly, nay, suddenly, continental; if you will (you really should.)

We even have horses, in the 15th Century no less!

Disco wins yet again.

Lead on SE5!
Started my first game of Brave New World today.
I chose JC (Julius that is, not the other Johnny with the sandals and beard) and rule the Romans. Quickly found Empress Wu and her Chinese hoards on the same continent... but rapidly settled 4 cities to pen her in. Now she begs in vain for an Embassy and open borders in a vain attempt to break out of my encirclement.
Cash was strapped for a while until my army of archers cleared the nearby Barbs - kerching!
Now 400BC and time to consolidate for a bit.
Have sent Jason and his Argonauts out in a trireme of discovery

I have to go to Almaty on Wednesday for a couple of days and had been looking for some kind of guide, and this seems as good a write up as any. Thanks.

I got a little bored with my previous Venetian game and started a new one over the weekend. Boy do the Venetians enjoy their culture.

Venice is located in the mountains on the South-Eastern tip of the continent of Europa. There is a very fine gold mine next door and an abundance of crabs fill our waters. To the West, occupying the South-West point of the continent, the former city-state of Sydney was persuaded by the vast riches of one of our earliest merchants to join our fledgling Republic.

Immediately to the North, Hiawatha has spread 5 cities across the middle of the continent. His neighbour, occupying the North of Europa, is Sulieman. Scattered to the East and West are the city states of Hanoi, Panama City, Hong Kong, Byblos and others I forget. They all seem to want faith and culture in an almost endless supply.

Thankfully, Venice has mastered both. Taking quickly to Eastern Orthodoxy, the people of Venice have built a wide range of religious monuments to their God. Hiawatha, Sulieman and, indeed, all of the city states of Europa are united behind the one true Lord.

Despite this, Sulieman and Hiawatha seem to be locked in an eternal power struggle. It seems our missionaries cannot calm them. Thankfully this means Venice has reached 1800 AD without firing a shot in anger, other than at heathen barbarians, although a ring of fortresses filled with cannons rings the city of Venice where it is not already protected by combination of mountain and sea. Just in case Hiawatha gets any ideas. He seems to be stuck with composite bowmen, so we're not overly concerned.

We recently discover the lands of the Poles, Swedes and Aztecs, spread across two barely separated continents to the West. The Aztecs appear to be playing their role of wanton aggression against their neighbours, whilst our missionaries spread the good word. The Aztecs have not taken kindly to our proposal that Eastern Orthodoxy being named the one true global religion, although we are confident with the support of Hiawatha and Sulieman that the vote will pass.

The Venetian people have no desire to spread their lands overseas. The global elite flock to Venice to marvel at its great works of art, writing and music and, having seen the state of the tourists, the Venetians are quite happy to sit behind their heavily guarded city, watching their uncultured neighbours to the North tearing each other apart, whilst being Godly and scientific all at the same time.

After all, pretty much every wonder of the world seems to have been built in their back garden. Why would they want to travel anywhere else?

The latest amusement for the people of Venice is to spend their vast wealth by gifting advanced military units to city states on the periphery of the Aztec lands. I believe the Venetians are simply re-enacting the Spanish conquest of Central America by strategically placing the fruits of gunpowder among the once-marauding hordes of Aztec pointy-stick men.

Worth getting the expansion?

Re-installed Civ5 again last week, so I'm getting back into the swing of things.
