I have no idea what type of magazine it has become (that link said that it had Rihanna on its cover in 2015 ) but for a teenager into punk and new wave
in the '70s it was essential reading.

They used to slate dance music and then starting doing articles on dance music and promoting it years later. Lost all credibility. Then of course all magazine media must be struggling.

Yes the total unadulterated bias displayed by the NME was something to be enjoyed back in the day.

When I worked in central London in the lates 80s/early 90s, I used to go out of my way on a Tuesday lunchtime to get the new issues of the NME and Melody Maker, but as I got older I sort of lost interest in it and had pretty much given up on it by the early 00s - the free version was embarrassingly shit, surprised it took so long to be put out of its misery.

Meh. I was always a Kerrang kind of a chap but my sister was an avid reader and I did like the Thrills page back in the 90s.

Their belligerent insistence that a never ending conveyer belt of tuneless dog shite indie bands were the future of rock roll used to get on my tits though.

Having leafed through a free copy recently it was an absolute embarrassment though and it’s probably for the best that it was put out of its misery to be honest.

I stopped reading it in about 1982. It had some genuinely good writers, though, in the late 70s / early 80s - I thought Danny Baker was probably the best. Ian Penman was good as well.

Used to buy NME,MM, RM & Black Echoes every week. The print used to be all over my hands. Will always remember NME back in the 70s for the expression "smart arse one liner".

I liked the free version. It had a lot of filler and so only took 30 mins to read, which was ideal.

Part of my musical education from around 1998 - 2004. Used to eagerly await each issue - NME, John Kennedy & John Peel were basically the only way to learn about new stuff back then.

Leafed through the paper version every now and then - pretty sad to see its demise but accepted this was the new way of things and was happy to see the old dog still kicking. Much broader in its approach whilst it was a free copy, but perhaps losing the genre focus was part of the problem?

EDIT - The Fly used to be pretty cool. Whatever happened to that?

NME basically pulled a rabbit out of the hat in the mid 2000's and created this scene where they elevated lots of average bands to an indie super explosion and it meant the NME was massively at the centre of everything and then they kept trying to re-create it but the framework changed and they couldn't move with it.

Sad its dying for all the good people who work there, not sad its dying for how bloated, pointless and out of touch it was.
