Giro/Tour of Italy 2009

Well the first big tour of 2009 is starting today. Lance is back, though I'm not sure why. I think (hope) he's lost it. There aren't too many big names in this.

My prediction:

1) D.Cunego
2) L.Leipheimer
3) D.Menchov

Is Contador not riding this year? I'd love Cunego to win but he has blown hot and cold since winning it before a few years ago.

I have my Eurosport Player subscription all ready and looking forward to watching the Team Time Trial this afternoon. Pretty good chance Bradley Wiggins could be in the pink jersey this evening as this is a stage that Garmin are focusing on.

Well it's not Bradley Wiggins, but another Brit Mark Cavendish who dons the pink jersey after the first stage. Now that's a good start. I can see Cavendish winning a fair few stages this year. More results later.

Cavendish's comments about Garmin certainly spiced things up ahead of the stage. It's alway good to know he has the ability to back up the mouth and he really made an effort to make sure he was first across the line.

Congrats Cav - first ever Brit in pink.

So Mark Cavendish is not happy to be wearing the leader's pink jersey after a team time trial. He says he'll only really deserve it after a victory in today's 2nd stage. So I'm going for:

1) M.Cavendish
2) A.Petacchi
3) R.Hunter

I can't see that many sprinters to trouble Mark, but he'll still have to get over the mountains, and there's a really tough one in the 5th stage this week, if he's to win a maximum amount of stages.

Petacchi wins. Cavendish still in Pink.

Read this morning that Cavendish will pull out two thrids of the way through this to concentrate on the green jersey in the tour.

Tomorrow's stage is flat and should end with a bunched sprint finish. Cavendish for his revenge this time.

1) M.Cavendish
2) A.Petacci
3) A.Davis

The good news: Armstrong hasn't been able to stay with the best.
The bad news: nor has Cunego.

Di Luca looks in control so far.

Cunego showed today that he isn't a stage racer. Basso looked quite good though. Good finish from menchov, but yeah Di Luca looks in control.

Cunego seems to have a worrying habit of blowing up on the grand tours (his one Giro win excepted). Shame really - I thought he was a good bet for the Tour last year before and doesn't seem to be in with a shout in this race either.

Also a shame that the crook Basso is looking so strong.
