Not strictly true

When we had the Cabaye and Benteke transfer sagas this place was in total disarray, quite frankly it's been less frantic during the relegation struggles.

Seeing we have successful business men running our club. Why can’t we close a deal on players we want ?

Maybe you've answered your own question (mutch aside and the Holloway summer window)

Looking forward to seeing Hodgson finally backed in the transfer market and soon. He’s worked miracles to date and I wouldn’t want to see the Club not repay him by not signing the players needed to strengthen the squad. Mid-January and no additions doesn’t inspire my confidence that those three or four players (at least) will appear before the end of January. If they don’t, it will be absolutely unforgivable and equally unjustifiable.

Seriously hoping that the game plan adopted by our new DOF isnít to wait until the final day/night to pick up some bargains. Mind you, we did snap up Wayne Andrews that way. Got close with AJ and also the Diving Queen in the last window.

Twenty years ago today we signed Valerian Ismael for a club record fee and also signed Tomas Brolin on a free transfer

Both were a waste of money

Buying in January is tough unless you're buying a player the selling club doesn't want.

It's abit like buying a house where the person you're buying off needs to find a new home before you move into to theirs. There's a chain of events and people might not blink until the end. It's not a Palace thing it's a January window thing.

I agree really but when you say it like that - it makes you wonder how exactly is it different in the summer. Can you buy players clubs don't want to sell then? Isn't there a chain then too?

I assume that in the summer, the window is a lot longer so clubs feel they have appropriate time to find a replacement (or move into rented accommodation I.e. use the domestic loan system). It seems that there’s always a spate of activity at the beginning of the summer window as the above moves happen and then it’s quiet for a while before the deadline day panic (similar to the jan window).

Jan window is always tough (a seller’s market!) unless you overpay (i.e. pay someone £600k for their one bedroom Croydon bolthole ...PVA) or the selling team wants rid (Schlupp). Hence we seem to be focusing on ‘special situations’ where a player is shortly out of contract or we know the selling club have a need to raise money for whatever reason.

This seems to be the right approach. Now it’s a game of poker and I believe we’ll only find out who’s arriving in the final week of the window as 1. Player needs to make a decision (Sanchez), 2. Selling club now risks losing player for free / runs out of time for competing bids so is forced to take what’s on the table (Guaita hopefully).

I don’t think the club are complacent and we haven’t seen loads of moves happening in Jan. Need to make sure we don’t make any big mistakes either by overpaying (Tosun anyone !?) and offering long contracts to mediocre players (Mutch?).

Here’s a thought: if we are finding it tough to recruit now, so are our relegation rivals... it could be argued every squad beneath us is short of a player or two and in a more precarious position.

Swansea need 3-4, Stoke don’t have a manager, Brighton weak upfront, West Brom spent a lot in the summer (where is Burke everyone rave about !?) and have pards etc

Yes, we are depleted by injury but with sakho, Ward, Townsend, Schlupp back over the next month or two and on 25 points, we should have enough.

Easy for us to say sign x, y, z but we have to trust the owners are long-sighted and run the club as a ‘business’ and ultimately make the right decisions.

Look forward to see who joins on 31st !

No other club in the league has one striker and two keepers. And that's not to mention the other places in the squad where we lack depth. We need 4 signings at minimum.

Surely if we’d had our eye on someone before jan we’d a sign them by now?
Agents will know we are desperate to sign in certain areas what with our injury list. So we’ll probably end paying over the odds for someone who’s not what we wanted.
Think we should forget this window and keep going. Use the transfer kitty to do up the toilets in The AW.

Interesting analysis. I guess the measure of whether our owners have failed in the transfer market like during the summer will be whether our relegation rivals do better than us in strengthening this window.

By the way, Everton, within 2 points of us in the table, have signed Tosun and maybe Walcott. So, we do appear to be falling behind at least some of the teams around us, with only 2 weeks or so left in the window.

I would be entirely unimpressed if we signed Walcott to be honest.

If you wanted a symbol of English failure over the past decade, he would be the best example – hugely overhyped as a teenager, picked for the World Cup without merit, moves to a big four club, paid too much, fails to deliver, moves to smaller club for equivalent wages, sits there happily, retires having won the odd FA Cup and worth £25m.

Our January recruitment in the past few years has had some successes – Dann, Ledley, Luka, Sakho – and we have unfortunately been in positions where we have needed them to be. This January is the same but I would back the scouting team to pull it a couple of good ones out of the bag.

They have fairly limitless money and are happy to pay over the odds (Sigi for the money spent has not been good value). Cut cloth to your needs and income.

He didnít fulfil his potential but still is a very good player. Scored 19 goals last year.

Yep. Still, putting anything even slightly negative about the club is hugely frowned upon on this website.
