petrol

dont know if im turning into a tight northerner but im fed up , when putting petrol in the car and spending more than i set out to spend .
i think this is a scam and recently decided to put under the amount i intend to put in , if you know what i mean.
i spoke to the lady at the checkout and she says everyone goes over , so that made me think even though it may only be pence the amount of money they make out of this must add up . is it me or does this annoy anybody else?

I've mastered the art of getting it spot on without going over. It does irk me a lot when it goes over.

Isn't it possible for them to devise a "lock", in which you input how much you want to put in before hand, and it only gives you that amount? I guess they'd lose out on the extra pennies, as you say.

i think that must be possible as alot of the garages in spain you stand there like an idiot wondering why it isnt working, and eventually work out they want you to pay first and then it cuts out at what youve paid

That used to be how they worked.

One of the problems was when someone had a tank that only took £20 worth and put in that they wanted £25 worth.

Not a problem at all. Pumps have the ability to use an amount as a maximum but use the sensor to override it. Many foreign countries have this, especially those that have attended pumps.

But if you didn't, and only ever took pennies, over the course of several centuries (subject to improvements in medical science) you could save a fortune!

I find that bilking solves all of these issues.

Surely if you put (say) £21 in each time when you intend to put in £20 you will just end up visiting the petrol station 5% fewer times, but still pay the same amount in total. In what way is this more profitable for the petrol station? I'd have thought they'd rather have you in the convenience store for one extra visit in 20.

Or do you decide to go for a oh-so-slightly longer drive each time you get a tiny bit more than you intended?

Or have I been whooshed big time?

There is also an app for android phones (Whatgas) that you can use to find the cheapest local petrol station, and can update the prices yourself

Don't think they're allowed to anymore, incase the auto shut off fails.
I once saw a truck pouring petrol from the filler when this happened.

yes you may be getting more petrol , but your missing the point , i only want to spend that amount of money, not the amount the pump dictates to me.

I was in Luxembourg in September on my motorbike and it was £1.05 a litre. I was both sick and delighted at the same time.

The Jet on purley way was quite reasonable at the weekend - 132.9, compared to 138.9 locally to where I live

A little off topic (sorry), but take a look at this info which could explain why fuel is so expensive ... because of the property market collapse!!!??!!

To view the link you have to Register or Login

and then this ...

To view the link you have to Register or Login

and take a look at the graph here ...

To view the link you have to Register or Login

would appear that a key reason for high fuel prices is the collapse of the housing 'bubble' in 2008!
