He's proven himself to be a good finisher when a) he's confident, and b) when he gets good service.

Neither of which have happened this season to date.

Before this season the thing wickham needed was to watch the intelligent movement of benteke to get a run on his man. It was what made him unstoppable combined with his leap in air. Wickham has the finishing already

Probably still stands except benteke might need to remind himself

Has his service really been much worse than last season?

Gets 1 in 5 in the premier league, scores with his head, his left and his right. Plus he offers significantly more than just goals. For me, when fit heís the best striker at the club

He's excellent when he's had support, which I think he would with Hodgson's love of 442. Playing Pardew's 4231 with no genuine attacking midfielder didn't help his cause as he had so little support, far less than Benteke has had since, but he still held the ball up really well. If he'd been playing this season, I think he'd be close to double figures, if not already made them.

Can't wait to get him back, you can only hope he's not lost too much physically and get's a chance to get back into form without getting too much grief.

I think he has had plenty of chances good finishing would have seen him get enough goals to have us mid table.

Like several of our absentee players, (notably, not poor old Puncheon), Wickham gets better the longer he is out. No wonder he is in no hurry to return.

Testiment to how poor Benteke’s been, that after 16 months out injured, Wickham is now elevated to “best striker at the club”.

It's a myth that he has good service. The fact that every single cross is floated is infuriating and every single player does it so it's clearly the way they're coached. Why does every other team seem to be able to whip crosses in to their strikers while we put the kind of crosses that are begging for the keeper to claim them or if they actually get to a forward player they have no power to use. Basically it doesn't matter how many balls you put into the box if they're all s**t. A good example is the big Benteke chance on Monday. Whether you're on the side that it was a brilliant save by De Gea or you think that Benteke should have done better, the fact is that if there's any pace on the ball in, with that much space for Benteke the keeper is completely taken out of the scenario.

I just can't believe that Benteke would put up with those crosses unless they are what he wants. He has been here a couple of years now and he doesn't look like a shrinking violet to me. I reckon he likes them floated in there which is why they come that way.

You could be right. You kind of have to think back to his brilliant header against Everton a couple of years ago to see that he can really get power behind those floated balls in (he was also incredibly unlucky with the chance that I mentioned from Monday) I just feel like it must be easier to score headers from crosses with more power. Without meaning to keep referencing Monday but looking at recent times, Benteke's header was much better than Murray's against Arsenal but the pace on the ball in from Gross for Brighton meant that even though Murray headed straight down the middle of the goal Cech couldn't get there quick enough. It's so much harder to score if you're having to generate all the power in the header yourself. My only issue is that even if Benteke is asking for that kind of service, surely the coaching staff should be encouraging variation and the only player that gives us that is Wilf who clearly favours pull backs over crosses. Which also begs the question as to why the midfield haven't made more late runs into the box when Wilf's been playing. Most of McArthur's goals have been from those kinds of moves so it's frustrating that him and Cabaye don't do it more.

Basically it feels like the reason we score so little considering how much better our overall play has been in the last few months is that we're so predictable when we get in attacking positions.

It is likely that Benteke's Palace legacy will be his failure to exploit wide open space.
