Burnley have signed a decent winger in time for our game. I imagine we'll leave it to the last minute again.
Oh well, here's hoping. Hopefully we'll get one in before Saturday. Hodgson has one hand behind his back at the moment. |

Unlikely. The Board always seems to approach August and January fixtures as if they were friendlies with no points on offer.

The Brighton game highlighted our lack of a back up squad which would have seen us progress in the competition, the lack of a striker was so obvious that it became embarrassing. Progress in the FA cup is crucial to fans and clubs of our standing, yet we see it as a distraction, that is only because of our failure to strengthen and have a decent squad that we can rotate with. Lets hope we bring in a Couple of signings before the week is out so as they can be settled in and ready for Next weekend. |

Of the remainder how many have you heard of and do you think would make our first team, even with injuries? Then you have an idea how many serious transfers at our level have been made in the first 10 days. 1. Transfers at a level we could not be involved in: Virgil Van Dyke Ross Barkley Cenk Tosun Adrien Silva 2. Players loaned from another English club which we cannot do: Georges-Kevin Nkoudou 3. Players we could have been involved in transfer, how many have you heard of/want? Moritz Bauer Konstantinos Mavropanos Terence Kongolo Viktor Gyokeres Last edited by GreatGonzo; 10-01-2018 at 03:00 PM. |

It's the same old dynamic; buying early means paying more and if we want to achieve the required signings at the price we can afford to pay, we have to haggle.
Say we had a budget of £45M. What would we prefer? Three signings at £15M each, snatched in the first two weeks of the window and maybe fit to play Burnley or those three signings brought in later, with a combined saving of £10M which we use for a fourth player? We need reinforcements between the sticks, defense, midfield and attack. I can see the sense in squeezing the price to maximize bodies over the line. Of course, we might do as we did in the summer, and massively under-support the manager by not paying the going rate or simply risk the huge holes in our squad. I'm sure that prospect is a prime cause of the panic and distrust going on right now among us. But let's show a little faith and assume the club wants to bring in several reinforcements and is trying to make sure we can afford them ALL, even if we don't have them for Burnley. The match after that we are unlikely to get anything from anyway. We already axed one manager after our utter failure to support him not only in terms of time but in terms of personnel. I don't believe we will do so again because we see clearly we are up against it now and last-ditch cure rather than prevention is how we do things. The club lost the chance to open a new systemic chapter under FDB because we weren't willing to do more than give lip service to the idea of investing in quality, particularly on a technical level in midfield and attack. This window will hopefully correct that massive oversight with a necessarily high influx of players, a process that to be affordable, will require time and negotiation. I'm sure we'll see the kind of footballers we require arriving in January, about five months after FDB needed them. If we don't, and are left with Wilf as our only means for creativity, ( for yet another year ) an out-of-form Benteke up front and WH in goal, then the club may well pay the ultimate price and will deserve it. Let's hope the brains aren't in the tail this winter as it was in the summer. I have faith the club will properly support at least one manager this season. This window is not like previous January windows. There are no glaring holes in the first team, other than perhaps the goalkeeper. Unless someone amazing becomes available I would keep the powder dry until the summer.

He may turn out to be a good loan signing, he may not.
Played 244 minutes in 18 months since he joined Spurs. Has played 1 minute in the PL this season and scored against APOEL Nicossia in hos only full match. A goal or assist every 3 games before signing from Marseille but not transferred that sort of return to the PL yet. Will be interesting to see how he does at Burnley. |

I am mildly surprised that at minimum a back up keeper and back up striker were not signed already. What have Coe and Freedman been up to for the last x months..
