Often less than 6k on occasion!.

Its also worth mentioning in these days of everyone having STs , that crowds would fluctuate massively in those days; 10k would come and go depending on the fixture and weather etc.

I should have pointed out, I meant 6,000 average per season, which actually happend in Steve Coppell’s first two seasons 84/85 and 85/86 which were seasons where Palace were largely trying to avoid relegation.

To put it into some context though, the mid 1980’s was the lowest point in British football history, when even the clubs that today average in excess of 50,000 i.e. would be half that figure usually, we would travel to Chelsea, Leeds, Man City or Newcastle and the gate would be around the 15,000 mark, so it was a national dip in gates mid 80’s rather than just Palace in particular - although we did manage to register some very low gates - the 3,700 v Carlisle in 85/86 being the League lowest at home, which actually was not the lowest gate of the season either, as only 2,200 turned up for the home game with Brighton in the Full Members Cup - which was the first season of the competition we eventually won in 1991 when sponsored by Zenith.

Coventry 9th Largest city by population in England. Just watched the Coventry open top bus parade the play off final trophy as it drove through my village. Bit embarrassing league 4 3rd place trophy.
