DJ Discussion

Now I have been playing music at gigs and events for several years now and have been quite happy doing stuff "on the fly" using just a laptop and a software I learnt on whilst being a radio presenter.

I recently acquired a digital deck system (A Numark) which i am having fun with doing parties etc. I have also decided to specialise in genres that I like and am familiar with, this means I am very good at ska, reggae, soul and funk and 70-80´s pop () however, I would like to step it up a bit and offer my services out to do "sets" at festivals etc. I am already doing one at an event I arrange all the music for in the summer, which will be a soul session during the day and then a funk and reggae party session in the evening....which leads me to a question.

Do you DJ´s out there formulate a set in advance, with allowances for change according to audience reaction, or do you (as I do) just go where the music leads you without much planning?

In my repertoire I'll have collections of songs for times and occasions and genres I play.

Usually I'll also have a current "crate" of around 100 songs.

That's about as pre-planned as I'll allow. I always prefer to read the crowd.*

* Sometimes my reading tells me they don't like what I'm playing. Sometimes I can improve this - there have been times when I haven't!

Somewhere in my head (probably best way of describing it) I have a library of combinations of 2-4 records that I know work well together. During a set and depending on crowd reaction etc i'll stick these groups of tunes together to make one overall set.

Pre-planning a set is a dangerous game as you never know what the person before you is going to play and also how the crowd are going to react.

But a good point noted.

Just put Mull of Kintyre on repeat and head to the bar.

Some only bother playing what they want.

Remember asking at my brothers wedding for them to play a song from the film he and his wife went to see about 13 times but responded to 10 year old me, I'm not playing that it's sh*t.

Granted the song was painful but not as bad as his DJing at a wedding!

Yeah I think for some of the massive things in Europe they may do that as it ties in with the light show etc. I mainly DJ to a couple of hundred drugged up teenagers so haven't had this concern yet

I always start off with good intentions of doing loads of prep and building the set in advance. All the prep goes out the window though as soon as I get going and get a feel for the crowd. Having said that I’m nowhere near the level of playing at festivals so probably a lot less pressure. I did invest in a Reloop Beatpad2 though which is great and made me question carting twin CD decks around.

Oh god yes, I hate that attitude.

Mind you, is it worse than people coming up to you with an iPhone asking to play a track from it?

I played a wedding for a friend, so done requested 99 Problems, which I duly played. Mother of the groom went mental.

I used to do a fair bit of “indie” stuff. I knew a few songs would go together and had a good mix I knew I could do, but I’d always throw in some rogue stuff. And had some staples I knew I could rely on.
Something about Getting Jiggy With It being played at midnight would guarantee everyone dancing.

And yeah, “can’t you stream it on Spotify? You can use my phone?”
