I've never understood why Greaves isn't worshipped like Best, Moore or Charlton. His goalscoring record is incredible.

357 goals in the top flight. 44 in 57 for England. If it happened before 1966 then not much interest. Had he played the WC final in 1966 he would have been a lot more recognised. Terrible decision to leave him out

Don't know whether you know, but Greaves and Charlton were the two teenaged rivals for "the best young England hope" (one from the north, one from the south). You would have to say that Charlton was the greater player. |

Greaves was the starting striker at the 66 World Cup and played 3 or 4 games before getting injured. He was fit for the final, but left out in place of Geoff Hurst.

Alf was a disciplinarian who demanded absolute commitment, Jim was wayward, wouldn't be told, wouldn't give up the baccy and had the reputation of going AWOL against the top international teams. Before Alf, England were like now - serial failures. Before the 62 WC in Chile, there was the usual ballyhoo about England as one of the favourites, John Haynes (captain) was very shifty when interviewed - you could see he knew England were not good enough. The FA had the common sense in those days to bring in a strong character and to trust him - Alf wouldn't put up with any interference. |

Yeah, his goalscoring record is something else. Deserves to be right up there talked about with the best of his era.

I think his peak was slightly earlier than Best's, and he didn't feature in high-profile games like the World Cup final or European Cup final. So he didn't get the exposure of the others, especially on TV.
