From wiki:-

He soon made an impression at youth level, scoring 51 goals in the 1955–56 season and 122 goals in the 1956–57 season under the tutelage of youth team coach Dickie Foss.[7] Greaves scored in the 1958 FA Youth Cup final, but Chelsea lost the two-legged tie 7–6 on aggregate after Wolverhampton Wanderers turned round a four-goal deficit with a 6–1 win in the second leg.[8] He turned professional in the summer of 1957, though spent eight weeks working at a steel company to supplement his income during the summer break.[9]

That last line - they are millionaires now before they've played 10 games.

Don't know whether you know, but Greaves and Charlton were the two teenaged rivals for "the best young England hope" (one from the north, one from the south).
You would have to say that Charlton was the greater player.

They were both great players but with different styles. Greaves was the classic goal poacher from inside the box with a deft touch, but had great movement with the ball too. Bobby Charlton had the ability to score from distance with a very powerful shot. Ah those were the days, but I do like the look of Kane and he is still only 24.

Pre TV days and celeb culture. I remember going to a function with Bobby Moore attending, after he had done his bit he went for a beer and was just left standing on his own at the bar.

Greavsie was ill during the World Cup, recovering from jaundice if I recall.

He played in the first game against Uraguay that ended 0 - 0.

Then the squad players didn't receive medals, today the world and his wife do.

Don't understand this. He was and is. Famous for being a great footballer. For his goalscoring, For being dropped from 66 team. For his later alcoholism which he beat.

And in the 80s was bigger than Lineker in terms of TV and also early on with Ian St John formed a witty partnership before the show nosedived a bit.

That show was abysmal and all they ever did was take the pi55 out of palace.

Hard to believe it was the only football show outside of MOTD and the Big Match

I might have dreamt this, but I am sure there was a testimonial at Selhurst for someone and the opposition included many players from the 66 world cup team. Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves both put in an appearance, some time after they had both retired. Charlton duly obliged with a thunderbolt from outside of the box and Greaves, although somewhat heavier that during his playing days, showed that he still had the natural talent and scored a typical Greaves poacher's goal. Both fantastic players, but different - I don't think you say one was better than the other.

Ha-ha, Ian St John's only function in that show was to snigger/chortle at Jim's jokes.

Yes, probably silly, but I was just pointing out that Jim and Bobby were the press' (not much 'media' in those days), two competing young stars.
