Iím not a huge fan of the other Westfields myself, but for us theyíre the only show in town.
I think the westfields are alright as far as shopping centres go. The main problem with the only one i go to (stratford a 3 or 4 times a year) is it just simply gets too busy. So it's just not a pleasant experience.

Seems pretty similar to the big malls you get in asia except they always seem deserted by comparison.

I gave up on Croydon a loooong time ago after wasting many years wistfully wishing it could reinvent itself as an aesthetically pleasing, cultural, arty, something for everyone kind of place commensurate with its geographical positioning of Brighton to the South and uber world city London on its doorstep to the north.

Nothing can change for the better really in the centre because of what the planners did in the 60's and what they don't seem to have learned from to the present day. Unless Wellesley Road is razed it will always be the that Croydon that outsiders correctly perceive it to be.

A desired rite of passage for everyone that I knew growing up there including myself was to escape the place. Took a while but that box was eventually ticked. It drains the soul does Croydon.

agree wholly - Croydon is a monstrosity with horrendous deprivation , lack of facilities, substandard housing and just a joyless concrete consumerist
block. the last thing needed is yet more shopping facilities .
As for Boxpark just adds to the shallow consumerism

but isnt this every large towns remit.

Croydon is scummy because of the people not because of the shops, at the end of the day thats why "better" stores like Allders closed because the clientele just isnt there anymore. The college also needs to move.

Make croydon a friendly, pleasant, low crime place to shop and maybe it can recover.

.
How is Croydon, and it's populace in the central area, different to that in Strafford, Shepherds Bush or further afield, in other cities that have managed to greater or lesser extent to keep their centres attractive? Does Croydon have uniquely scummy people?

It is due to the people, yes, but also to the shops; each issue contributes to the 'image'. For investors or for visitors.

Just one other element is having a ******* dual carriageway and flyovers bisecting an entire town centre, then lined with soulless concrete building and car parks. Roof over the roads or something and have a pleasant walkway along the entire length of the road from west to east. Just one crazy idea.

Croydon (and Bromley, Dartford/Bexleyheath and Sutton) needs a large university in the centre.

Croydon was the best shopping centre in south London in the 70s, Retailers like Grants and Allders once stood strong and proud , Whatever caused their demise has not gone away , Westfield Croydon is about building more highly profitable and ugly high rise shoe boxes not regeneration , More slums of the future and empty shops is not the answer to the problem .

Isnít that what redeveloping the Whitgift Centre is aiming to do?

You have to improve the area and opportunities to attract the retail and restaurant/cafe companies. There are businesses that want to come, we have the population here and thereís plenty of money around the Croydon area.

Did you try shopping in Allders during the last years of its life? It wasnít a Ďbetterí store at all. It was stuck in a time warp, sadly.

Whatís your problem with the college? Isnít it normal for a town our size to have its main college building in easy reach of the public transport, given the age of most of its students?

Ah yes. I was sort of thinking of a kind of institution(s) such as in Brighton or Kingston. Would sort of provide a wider mix of yoots in the town centre. Not that we would ever get Cinatras back. TBF, the campuses along the river front at Chatham have definitely improved the are around the outlet centre and dockyards (at last).

I actually had a idea to move the main road back to north end and build the westfield on the site of wellesley road (or above it)and the whitgift. I guessalot of stuff is listed though, ie the allders building

Last throw of the dice for an outdated commuter hotspot.

Iím hopeful itíll bring shops, restaurants and visitors back to the area.

As a local Iím delighted it looks like itís going ahead. This combined with boxpark is actually starting to offer Croydon a vibe and a future.

I hope my daughter finds her first job there, starts her first business there and buys her first home there!

Whilst this whole saga seemingly drags on, will the news on Hammerson buying Intu last week and now Westfield being bought by a French property group, will this threaten the Croydon proposals? I really hope not, Croydon needs this.
