The reality is that 99 times out of a 100 we will lose to the Ďbig Sixí if they play to their top level - which Arsenal did.

Of course Arsenal were the better team by miles and their passing and crucially movement off the ball was something Palace teams never match. However, the thing that really won the game for them and lost it for us was the composure of their finishing. We had enough chances for an undeserved point but the final pass/cross/shot was always woeful (apart from once obviously).

If I bothered with marks Wilf would be deducted several for an especially stupid booking.

RLC vs MacArthur is a fair debate.

Though I thought MacArthur was average at best yesterday and vs Swansea.

But to describe Benteke as ďutter shitĒ yesterday is clearly nonsense.

No itís not. The vast majority of people on this thread think Benteke was shit. Itís not just me. He was uninterested and weak. At home. Against Arsenal.

Just watched the goals and first and second are down to Schlupp although maybe Speroni could have done better.

As one poster has said, we could have somehow got an undeserved point but there are always a few ifs and buts.

Benteke was neat but relies on service.

Although up against 3 centre halves, he got little support from others driving into the box and the delivery from wide rarely came early, if at all. What do you expect under those circumstances?

Given that the guy writing that is probably neutral towards palace, it's an interesting observation. It's a running theme with both speroni and hennessey that they 'could' have done better on a lot of goals conceded. I wonder combined how many points we have lost in the last year or so as a result of not having any keeper good enough.
First goal I think Sanchez makes Speroni parry it, whether he was offside or not having someone that close to touching the ball changes Speroni's approach. He pushes it away as any keeper would but sadly not to a Palace shirt. The whole defence had more than enough opportunities to clear the ball so scapegoating Speroni for that one is harsh. There was Lacazette's shot in the first half where he had 4 defenders chasing him and not one of them putting a foot in, his shot thankfully went wide but the defence again just let him dance around them.

I think maybe 4 years ago Speroni might have saved the second, he hit the ball hard and through the defenders leg and Jules did get a hand to it but these shots go in. If Palace had scored it I don't think we'd be thanking the keeper for letting it in.

I think people have a massive unrealistic expectation of what a goalkeeper can do, every keeper lets in goals. A new keeper is massively needed but they aren't going to keep a clean sheet every game.

The only stats we have to go off are

Wayne - P9 W1 D1 L7 and conceded 18
Jules - P11 W3 D5 L3 and conceded 14

It is clear out of the 2 who the best is.

The only thing I expect from Palace players is the only thing Iíve ever expected.

They try hard. They show commitment. They never give in. They work their bollocks off and they give a shit.

Tell me which one of those Benteke evidenced last night ? And you can throw RLC in there as well if you want

Just silly to claim players that donít run around like headless chickens arenít trying. Such a simplistic view of football. Our problem is a lack of quality in some areas (and the wider squad) not a lack of application.

Mixed emotions. I didn't expect anything from this game without a bit of luck but somehow feel we didn't make the most of the match. I have only watched this once on Sky but I was left wondering why we played this same shape against the top clubs and even more so against a top club playing 343/352 leaving us heavily outnumbered in the middle. I like and understand the shape and how it looks to free Wilf up to play in areas that hurt the opposition with the most energy BUT expecting Luka and Cabaye to dominate 3 top class players for 90 mins in the middle seems odd, if not barmy. Also you would expect to have seen Macca start in one of the wide berths to solidify it. So why?

The answer isn't crazy but is i am not sure it's right still. I think he is simply putting his best 11 on the park in the formation that they should perform best in irrespective of the opposition. As we probably only have 12 players he would be happy starting (the impression I get) this is fragile at best and he is also trying to protect Cabaye, who is critical to our midfield currently, and rotating him with Macca. Back to the match. The space given to Wilshere as a result of this was a late Xmas present for him and he took full advantage. This allowed them to switch the ball quickly into our weak spots stretching an already stretched defence. At one point in The first half I swear the back 6 were giddy as they swarmed around us with their one touch play. We sat deep in first half and this relied on us clearing the ball to the front 2 who then needed to hold or make the break. This broke down with some poor passing out of defence and Luka (who hit some unpressured stinkers yesterday) and TBH the front 2 weren't successful.

Townsend revelled in the space in front of him albeit defending much of the time. The other challenge is Jules kicking. He is barely reaching the halfway line at times which means we are naturally starting things deeper. More accurate (for Jules) but it has quite an impact.
Highlight of the game was Andros' goal. Scoring from a set piece for the first time in our last match of the year is a pretty silly stat.

Speroni - 6 - one excellent save to his left and some safe hands on long shots were pluses.
Kelly - 5 - nightmare opponent who simply wouldn't stand still (trust him to choose this match to try for them). Mostly did OK but still not sure why TFM doesn't start.
Tomkins - 7.5 - another very good game from Tomkins.
Dann - 6.5 - lack of pace exposed a couple of times but otherwise solid.
Schlupp - 6 - never quite sure what goes on in his head but enough good stuff happened.
Townsend - 8 - never stopped running and took his goal brilliantly. Pleased he has stepped up again because been a while since he was MOM for me,
Cabaye - 7 - another good performance while being outnumbered alongside Luka.
Luka - 6.5 - some soft/sloppy tackles and passing at times punctuated what was an otherwise good game with insufficient support
Ruben - 7 - looks like a Rolls Royce at times and a very effective outlet on the left. Rarely gives the ball away and we always looked dangerous. Did well to block off Bellerin in 2nd half.
Benteke - 5 - don't want to join the bandwagon but he has to do more. His performance in both boxes is disappointing. He doesn't attack the ball in the air, has a 50p head defensively (weird) and he rarely gets a shot away. He is good at complaining though. Getting tedious.
Zaha - 7 - frustrating and brilliant. He really can beat someone in a phone box and yet not enough comes from this still. At his best he beats the player and crosses/passes or drives into the space. At his worst he beats them 3 times and the moment has passed. He is awesome and without him we are screwed but at top clubs he won't get picked if he does this, so maybe he should stay with us :^)

Sako and Macca both did well. Sako maybe clumsy looking but has made an impact each time as sub and does seem to get the others around him going. Macca is a good player and unlucky not to start.

If we start so deep like this against Man City they will destroy us. I know it's not allowed to suggest it but I would consider Hennessey starting just to get the ball into their half when we clear it and allow us to play further up the pitch. Releasing the front 2 is of little use if they have to stay in our half to get the ball. It would be a risk but worth considering at least.

I said it at the time but the 2nd goal, Speroni should have been screaming at Benteke to leave it, he had loads of time to come and claim it with no Arse players around.

Fair

Though that aside I canít honestly blame Speroni for any of the goals yesterday. And he kept us in the game first half with at least two outstanding saves.

Strange reading negative comments about Luka. Thought this was his best game of the season, particularly on the ball, where he played a range of intelligent and effective passes. He's been a bit off the boil this season, but I thought this was a real return to form.

I'm surprised that Roy gets a free pass from so many on here. His inflexibility in formation and personnel is a concern, its all so predictable.

Wilf was terrorising their defence every time he pulled into his natural position wide left, but those occasions were few and far between due to the manager until sako came on.

RLC is waste out wide offensively and is poor defensively, but still is played there week after week.

And for this game against the pace of Arsenal, TFM should have come in for Kelly.
