New PC Recovery Disk
All,
Quick question, I'm looking to buy a new laptop, but it doesn't come with the OS disks, which I understand is more and more the norm. So, question, when I get it and use the Windows 7 System repair disk option, if I had to replace the HDD would this still work to recover my OS?

You don't get the OS disks these days as all the relevant data is stored on a hidden(ish) partition of the HDD, with the bios configured to use this in the event of a full recovery being needed.
If you replace the HDD you can still do a full, fresh install of your OS if you have the relevant disks. I believe (but don't quote me on this, as I've not tried) but the product key should still be valid, so all you need is the media for the OS, not a separate licence. Without the OS media though you are stuffed. A good idea would be to make a backup of the hidden partition on a flash drive and keep it safe. If the HDD fails you can use an external caddy on another PC to format the new HDD, partition it correctly and pre-load the data from the flash drive. |
