Bands that are much better than the song they are best known for

Inspired by the one hit wonders thread.

Some bands are best known for one particular song, sometimes so much so that many people aren't familiar with the rest of their catalogue.

I am not really talking about one hit wonders here but have you got any examples of artists whose biggest hit(s) aren't necessarily representative of their broader catalogue. Bands whose other stuff is well worth exploring with an open mind.

I will start the ball rolling with The Pogues or Slade (purely coincidental that both are associated with Christmas songs).

REM - and more, specifically, their album Green. Those tracks p1ss on the two or three very well known ones.

And the music god/legend/genius that is/was David Bowie. Scores of album tracks so much better than his big hits like Ziggy, Let's Dance, etc.

If David Bowie's most famous song is Starman, he's a bad example because Starman was taken from his best album. Just because his first album had the somewhat slightly dazed song and memories of a free festival when all anyone remembers is the major tom song, and Hunkey Dorey had Bewley Brothers and Quicksand when all anyone remembers is life on mars, does not mean that his album tracks are overlooked. It just means radio stations aren't allowed to play them. Radio X would love to play She Shook me Cold instead of Man Who Sold the World, Magic FM would much prefer to put out Quicksand or Bewley brothers rather than life on mars, and Absolute FM might actually prefer to air Jo the Lion for a change rather than Sound and Vision. But they're not allowed to. These songs are protected and left for us to discover ourselves in the form of paying to access their back catalogues.

Fair points but I have Ziggy down as his sixth or seventh best album. I think it has been over-hyped as his most famous therefore must be his best in some peoples eyes.

So what five or six albums are better than Ziggy Stardust? I admit I only really know these:-

Space Oddity
Man who sold the world
Hunky dory
Ziggy
Low
Heroes
Scary Monsters
Let's dance

Lost interest after that.

Agree on REM, I also think their first three albums are hugely underrated.

Joy Division - everyone talks about Love Will Tear Us Apart but that ignores their albums Unknown Pleasures and Closer as well as the songs Transmission and Digital which are all incredible.

Hotel California is a very good album but would argue One Of These Nights abd Desperado are a match.

Not sure if its still the case, but for a long time Radiohead's most popular song was Creep. Thom himself hated that fact.

Add Station to Station, Aladdin Sane, Diamond Dogs into the mix and honourable mentions to Pin-Ups and Lodger.

The man was a creative monster 1969-1980.

Adam and the Ants probably best known for pantomime songs Stand and Deliver and Prince Charming, but Adam’s earlier punk stuff with the first Ants incarnation are far, far superior.

Excellent example, Dirk Wears White Socks is a great album (although I also still like Kings of the Wild Frontier).

Simple Minds - Don't You Forget About Me

Not a terrible song, but their stuff prior to that was so much more interesting, imaginative and innovative

Level 42, the first two albums are Brit Funk at its absolute best, the Running in the Family period led to the Gould brothers leaving...the band was never the same after that.

Also, Bryan adams early output was great rock stuff...sadly the awful dirge that got him at no.1 for an interminable period is what he seems to be judged by.

The Vapors though turning Japanese is good, the two albums New clear days and magnets are fantastic. Never got the credit or sales they deserved but they are back and giging now.

Lead singer was living in Thornton Heath in 1983 and saw him at a low key student party which was bizarre i thought seeing as he had had a no.1 not long before.

His girlfriend snogged me in a club in Crown Street around same time too. She was gorgeous. I definitely turned Japanese that night.

Electric Six - Made a minor splash in the early 00's with Danger! High Voltage and Gay Bar, but still packing out great gigs and cranking out albums, they've got plenty in the back catalogue as good or better than the two mentioned above.
