That's because we have a wildly uninspiring bunch of English players to choose from. Choosing Downing ahead of Adam Johnson is a very poor decision IMO, but I suspect this is very much to do with Hodgson's defensive drills. He probably doesn't trust AJ to do the dog work, and since that is his way, then fair enough.

But, God, Downing is shit.
