Physical strikers

I'm looking forward to seeing Benteke and Wickham back in action, but does anyone agree with me that Ben's physical attitude has become more timid over the last 18 months? I accept this may be due to lack of confidence, but he has such a superb physique that he and Wickham should be able to scare opposing central defenders witless if they put their mind to it.

Holton/Burridge and Wright/Bright come to mind as pairings whom opposing defenders would dread facing for physical reasons as well as talent. Wright improved Keown's face no end when he broke his nose at Wembley, and he wasn't nearly such a nuisance after that!

Happy New Year to all of you, let's hope we rattle some cages in the next five months.

When playing 4-4-2 usually works better with 1 big physical guy and 1 small quick player ( Bright &Wright )
Last time we had a chance to play that was Murray &Gayle but not so suppa Al funked that up .
Roy likes 2 up top so may play Wickham &Ayew or Benteke &Ayew, hopefully both could work.

Roy's tactics with Murray and Gayle up front would have been incredible.

Agree about Benteke being too timid - he has looked powderpuff at times. If I was that size, I would use it.

There was one moment last season when Benteke was in dire form, he was through on goal, he dithered and let a defender tackle him far too easily. He actually fist-bumped the defender, during the middle of a game. It's a tiny thing - and there's nothing wrong with a bit of sportsmanship - but I couldn't believe what I was seeing.

It summed up a lack of competitiveness, edge and urgency that has become commonplace in a lot of our attacking play. Not saying it's Benteke's fault, maybe it's Hodgson, but we are far too polite in front of goal.

Top strikers are ruthless - we need more of that.

Good post.

Bang on in my opinion, I remember Benteke being a nuisance and really putting himself about. It seems he's tried to change his game dropping shorter and trying to always receive at feet.

Maybe because he's never had the player just behind to support him, but he needs to be in the box with service into him.

Jorge Jesus got the best out of Bad Dost by telling him to just sit in the opposition box as much as possible and you only need to see his statistics to see how effective he was.

With this though he does need to show more aggression, as a center half you'd feel quite comfortable with Benteke of the last 18 month's. On the contrary hed be your worst nightmare when he was at Villa.

It is a conundrum . Should we have an Ayew type forward who does close down defenders and doesn't give them time on the ball but he lacks a physical presence. Or a Benteke type who is a threat at crosses but lets not forget he does seem timid at times ( which is odd with his physique ) and also he is very static thus giving defenders plenty of time on ball.

A Peter Withe / Steve Bull / John Fashanu 'type' would be most interesting.
