I had the opportunity to have a chat with Martin Keown recently - one of kids asked him "what was the roughest game he has been involved in" - To view the link you have to Register or Login - came the reply with Eric Young the roughest player he's ever encountered.

Didn't Keown end the game with a broken nose. I can remember he was a bit of a mess

Reading the report above Keown got the wrong man - Thomas did his nose with "a clumsy forearm smash" - the Ninja must have done Keown's lip .... those were the days .... "purely accidental" of course. Keown went on to say when Everton played Palace in the league in September he went into the match seeking revenge ... on the Ninja I believe?

And he succeeded - the Ninj ended up injured and out for some time iirc.

I seem to recall Palace Echo of the time suggesting that it had something to do with arow between them after the Liverpool 1-6 game. As far as I remember, Smith was bollocking the defence and Young stood up to him saying that it wasn't just them and that some of the blame should have been shared about.

Young then didn't play for quite a while and we ended up relegated.

Yes, it wasn't a challenge, it was the kind of assault that would get you five years if you did it to someone on the street.

Didn't Andy Thorn get sent off in the league match for smashing Keown in the face with his elbow, causing fifteen quid's worth of improvement, and Keown got sent off for retaliating?

I think it was just Keown who got sent off. Still looks bad on the season review video after all these years.

I saw Keown play for a 'Brighton XI' side at East Court, home of the might East Grinstead, c.1986 before anyone had heard of him. But once you had seen him, you would never forget him. He has that Crimewatch sort of a face. He scored a quite spectacular own goal in a famous win for the Wasps.

For some reason I remember the commentary to Keown's elbow on the Ninja "That is unforgivable". Martin Tyler I think it was.

I think you could be right there. I must dig out that video from the loft one of these days. I miss those old days of running ding-dongs. Keown, like a lot of seriously ugly men, is getting better looking as he gets older. It's like he's growing into his face. If he ever reaches 250, he should be mildly attractive.

As well as being a top defender he weighed in with his fair share of goals. Usually about 6 a season I think including one on his debut on a plastic pitch.

Terry Gibson told a funny story about Young in his Wimbledon days. Evidently, Eric still used his old Brighton sports bag to bring his kit into training everyday so, as a prank, Jones, Fashanu, Wise & Co arranged for it to be set on fire whilst the players were at training one day. When they got back to the changing room Eric was not amused and demanded to know who had set fire to it. No one dared to own up - as Terry Gibson put it, "No one messed with Big Eric"!

Bobby Gould did an open appeal on talksport last night 11pm ish to track down Young, and says alot of ex pro's have not heard from Ninja in years.
A quiet unassuming character, who according to Gould collected anything/everything.
Gould also stated Ninja wore the headband due to thinning tissue above the eye brows.

Geoff actually scored when he smashed keowns nose to his face with his shoulder if I remember right in that old stadium.
