Who remembers when Charlton were in the premier league?

Does anyone remember when Charlton first got promoted to the premier league?

They were underdogs for most of their matches. They had a team of championship players with a few additions.

They punched above their weight and after three seasons they established themsleves in the Premier league.

They had a relatively modest side and were often neutrals favorites in matches against Liverpool, Man UTD etc.

But after a while Charlton fans forgot their humble origins.

Staying up was no longer enough.

They went from plucky underdogs to fans with ideas above their station.

Their sense of entitlement grew and grew.

In 2006 they appointed Ian Dowie. He was later replaced by Alan Pardew who took them down.

They have been down there ever since.

Football is a funny old game.

do you mean those who said Palace should be aiming for european qualification? - just staying up in only the third season back would always have been a great success, especially given the money next year to further strengthen the squad and upgrade the ground, would have been possible from Christmas to do it without any real threat of relegation with some fairly easily obtainable draws eg against bournemouth, watford, liverpool and west brom, leading to a nice comfortable lower mid-table finish

Yes, I remember. I also remember that Charlton (formerly called Croydon FC) had one of the most successful women's teams around at that time. I saw them play in an FA Cup Final at Selhurst, years ago. They dominated the women's game before the Arsenal ladies took over and started to win everything. When the Charlton men's team started to do badly and were relegated, the clowns pulled the funds on the women's team and it broke up. They effectively killed off their only successful, trophy winning side, all because the blokes team was a bunch of flat-footed clowns.

People must have clearly forgot the manager has said earlier in the season that mid table wasn't good enough either.

Football is a funny old game.

This is well worth remembering in certain contexts, but I wonder who you are aiming at with this? Is it the chairman and the manager who made various statements about Europe, or the fans who are disappointed with a 14 match non-winning streak or both?

I think pure complacency right through the club together with a shocking injury crisis has resulted in this scenario. We are better placed as a club than we are showing at present, and I think loyalty towards the players and manager who got us up to 5th place before Christmas is the right way to go. As much as that was overachieving, what is happening now is underachieving in a bigger way relatively.

I think a lower mid-table finish without a desperate, nervous end of season should be a realistic aim for us to hope for (without having any sense of entitlement). I guess that's what we will achieve in the end this season, but we could have kicked on, and the fear now is that the better players will be picked off, and a better finish to the season could have avoided that. We have "plucked defeat from the jaws of victory" at times before when looking set for a decent run at the top level - we should be able to avoid that this time.

Fans enjoy a sense of fortune, and they like to wonder if this is their year: they like to stay in the game. It touches the subconscious; that's why Charlton self-destructed. They were bored with lower mid-table 'success' and the fans no longer felt themselves to be agents of their destiny, but just another premiership franchise. It was the same with Chelsea fans when Abromovich took them over, and you can see it in the sheepish faces of Man City fans after the game when they've beaten us at home. At least in the Championship, you've got a stake in your club's fortunes. I don't feel we do in the Premiership; and when relegation does happen, our new part-owner will feel like a one-stand who's overstayed his welcome - and things will quickly turn awkward.

Success in the first half of the season followed by a dramatic loss of form in the second is the only similarity we have with Charlton. We've only had a couple of years in the top league - nowhere near established. I'd take 17th this season and would have at the start of the season. I'd rather we signed within our means rather than do a Bolton/Blackburn/Fulham/Charlton/QPR.

I well remember the amused contempt I had for Charlton fans. Our fans would never turn into a bunch of comically entitled whingy Premfan wankers after a few seasons in the top flight, I thought.

Silly me. Some of the stuff on here this season has been embarrassing, even if much of it is posted by those who don't actually go to games, like Danny Boy.

I think it was called the 'premiership' way back then.
