Is the club going backwards now?

After a few years of being 'on the up' has the tide turned do you think? That sense of still climbing has gone, hasn't it? And not just on the playing field.

Hundreds of millions of quid in turnover 2011-16 with more to come yet still no sign of any new stands at Selhurst. Don't come to the ground often these days but in fairness saw the club had managed something spectacular v WBA. 2 for a cup of tea.

The fans were magnificent. Pity one or two of them who really would have the other fans best interests at heart aren't on the board.

The spirit and direction we had is not as strong and we are now, seemingly, just another daft smallish club playing 100k a week wages in order to stave off the inevitable relegation back to The Championship sometime over the next five or six seasons.

Pity.

Nope... We're a club stuck between the past and the future. We want to be established in the top tier, and part of that means we do need to dismantle some of the past, regroup and push to the future.

I really don't believe it's in anyone's interest (least of all those who have put into the club) to return to the championship.

I would say the upward trajectory of our transfer fees is indicative of our forward progression. Fair enough the stadium plans haven't been announced yet and the manager has a lot to prove that he can turn the form around but I would say the ambition being shown by the board is 100% taking us forward!

Spot on. Regroup and push to the future, ok. But not for the first time in history it directly lead to championship status.

No, we are going forwards. There have been a few things we need to sort out, kits in stock earlier, season tickets and memberships sent out earlier. We are playing catch up after years of under investment, and that includes everything.
Although we still need at least a couple of players which we'd have preferred in by now I'm confident we'll have these in over the next week or so.
I'm not a big Pardew fan but also trust that if things don't work out with him the owners are strong enough to make the tough decisions.
We have just signed a player for 27m,and more lined up. Onwards and upwards.

Yeah 3 seasons in supposedly the best league in the world and an FA cup final is going backwards.

The players that got and kept us up are aging or moving on it always happens everytime we or any smallish club goes up. Replacing them for the level they got us to is expensive and difficult. Replacing them with players to compete in the top half of the league with teams like Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd, Man City, Spurs, Arsenal etc is nigh on impossible for a club of our funds.

We are now having to build another team for the next few years, the style of play is changing. Pardew is trying to bring in players to do this, but with funds smaller than the established premier league teams have.

People need to accept we are primarily a championship size club. Building to establish us in the premier league is a huge job. Not only costs , but attracting players to play at a club with some of the worst facilities in the league.

Anyone that doesn't think so. I have some magic beans and fairy dust to sell you.

When you look at the playing staff now in comparison to 2013/2014 we've most certainly come forwards.

Mandanda, Cabaye and Benteke in particular shows how much we've progressed. Even the likes of Townsend and Tomkins is a complete step up in class to the likes of Jerome Thomas, Kebe, Gabbidon and Moxey etc. It's just particular areas like the infrastructure we need to address quicker and depending on Pardew's performance his job too. We now look more stable at this level than ever, despite the negativity at the minute. This is our fourth year which is phenomenal progress for us. Whatever happens on the pitch we definitely have the playing staff to remain at this level and comfortably in my eyes.

I am offering free Stanleys in Peckham tonight prior to the game, I can also advise on the quickest method to slip away. I will of course be harvesting your organs.

Maybe the board can bundle in some category B tickets with a trip to Dignitas?

The club is definitely going backwards in terms of fans on the BBS starting incredible ******* shit threads for people to continually moan about the slightest thing. I've been on the BBS for years and this is by far the worst period for this pathetic over-analysing, nit picking and immense level of negativity. Yes, i know this is a message board for discussion but that doesn't mean the relentless moaning about the team, the manager, the board, the players, transfers, the ground, the training facilities and every other detail of the club needs to subjugated to this level complaint. And yes i know you've framed your question as have we peaked but we both know it is another (not needed) chance for people to moan.

These are the facts. In six years since nearly going out of existence, we have gone from a club at the bottom of the championship to being promoted to having finished 11th, 10th and 15th and, played at wembley 3 tiimes including reaching a cup final. We have beaten Chelsea and Man City in that time. We have broke our transfer record multiple times to bring in high quality international players, with the latest transfer of Benteke making us the 7th English club ever to spend more than 25 million on a player.

Seriously what more do you want??????????????

STOP ******* MOANING!!!!

In an age where relegation would be catastrophic for any club due to the money they would lose out on, squad strength is probably the primary importance at the moment.

Leaving a squad with no fresh additions in favour of spending all your money on stadium renovation is a bit pointless if you end up getting relegated.

So in terms of squad improvement, the incomings have all indicated we are trying to go forwards. The outgoings have been disappointing and worrying, and hopefully we'll get a few more bodies over the line.

In terms of squad spirit, it's almost impossible to re-create the spirit that got us promoted, due to the fact that the majority of players were either dedicated senior pros neglected by former clubs (Damo, Ramage, Jedinak) or youngsters playing with no fear (Zaha, Bolasie, Ward). By luck, it created the perfect recipe for success, although having a 30-goal striker helped!

But with the type of player we're trying to attract now, that spirit will be gone before too long (probably when Jules and Damo leave). Not to be replaced by a bad spirit, but one that doesn't quite have the never say die attitude.
