Academy
Are we investing any of the millions in the academy or not? The current facilities are nowhere near the standard of a PL club?
I have heard this from many young kids/players/scouts. Are we now solely focused on PL money being reinvested in the finished article? All the academy needs is loose change from the £80-£100m we currently get. Losing the next Wilf, Nathaniel or Johnny Williams to Charlton Brighton or AFC Wimbledon would hurt big time but thats what's potentially happening now. |

Why would we lose a player to AFC Wimbledon? Looking at the young lads who have come through there the last few years though, most of them are local lads, so good to see.

Wasn't the whole training ground project largely with this in mind too? Thought so.
I'm not in the know enough to know if we have some real talents at the moment who are ready, but I have been hugely disappointed by how little a run out/chance we've given youngsters in the last 2 seasons, especially as we secured safety early. I get finishing as high as possible and how much this helps us in many ways, but I still think taking account all the info we could have given more a chance overall. It's sad to see and even the argument about the context of the league I think isn't a good enough excuse for the level of the blocking that has occurred, as some clubs in the league do more. However, without enforced changes I don't see things improving in the Prem. This is why the FPPP (sp?) rules are so crazy as if it is argued that youngsters can't develop under the bright lights and scrutiny then let's push to accept the football league is the place to develop talent and not make it harder for clubs to financially do this. As an example, I don't think Wilf would have broken through in the Prem or developed the same in the Prem as he was awful for a long part of his first season+. This would have shot his confidence with the Prem scrutiny plus he wouldn't have had long enough a run to develop his skills etc. I've always advised youngsters I've known to be talented (as form tutor etc) to play for a football league team for 100 appearances and then look for a Everton or someone else where you might play. |

I feel its an oversight of the club to have not sorted this out for the long term future
The academy facilities are shocking, no one can deny that, this will and is putting parents and kids off How far away from a facility are we Woosie? Any idea? |

They are trying. Again the issue is a suitable single location. Until that is settled, there is an understandable reluctance to spend money on what they have at the moment.

A good pal of mine has a young lad that looks a star in the making and was being scouted by 5 clubs and chose Palace purely because of location. If he had more time on his hands to do the traveling Palace would have been his 4th choice out of 5 after looking at all the clubs and their training/investment ect. He has said that Palace are quite poor in comparison to the likes of Fulham and others he looked at.

Good article on Saints and their Foundation.

Our first team facilities were/are badly slacking so it's no surprise our academy isn't of the best standard

It's probably true to say that the vast majority of our facilities throughout the club are sub standard following decades of under-investment. So this is not just an academy related problem.

In all honesty our academy hasn't been as good recently in producing players for Palaces first team as it used to be. Of the current first team only Zaha came out of the academy, prior to that it was Clyne and Moses who both left 4 and 6 years ago for relative small sums. I know we all love the academy and want to see our own succeed, but at what point do you stop pumping in millions if there is no return?

Take it out of the area and lay on a shuttle bus for the players from the likes of East Croydon, etc. We talk about legacy and the future but the cost of a decent academy in the PL era is peanuts that could reap massive rewards in the future. Look at the Saints as a perfect example.

Now going to be playing games at Goals?!
It really is all about the first team and that's it now isn't it. Surely there is, or has been a few quid spare to sort this all out? |

I think you have to discount the first crop that started in league one, and look at the players that have broken through since they joined the Premier League.

To view the link you have to Register or Login If you read down a bit from that link there's more info but the club had a very good location out in Surrey that they were considering but was dismissed. The one drawback being poor transport links so the club settled on goals. I still want to know how other clubs get kids to training seeing as most premier league training grounds/academies are out in the countryside. If the answer is a mini bus/shuttle then there's very little reason the Surrey site was dismissed. |

Shaw, Ward-Prowse, Chambers, Gallagher, Targett and there's another midfielder who's name escapes me. Six players, all blooded in the premier league.
