It’s an interesting question as to whether the squad naming date is tomorrow or Sept 1st. The PL rule book suggests it is immediately after the window for registering players closes but isn’t explicit.

Right now, including Ayew, we have 26 players, but there does seem to be a bit of consistent noise about Jairo and now Punch, while Innis is nowhere near. Either way, I would be surprised if we dropped much below 23-24 plus AWB as the younger players seem to be a year or so away from being ready for occasional bench appearances.

So Ayew in and Inniss out gives us a full 25 plus Wan-Bissaka.

I'm not sure moving on both Jairo and Punch makes sense given what happened last year with our injuries. OK benchwarmers but when we had Chungy, Delaney, Jach and Mutch in the 25 man squad last January surely both of them can do a better job.

Does seem some confusion on what can and can't happen to squad after today's deadline.

Can sell or loan outside English leagues.
Can loan out only to English leagues.

So can't see how naming 25 now would work but no obvious clarification either way.

And if you have 25 in squad today and you move players on later this month using above options can players out of contract still be brought in (If less than 25 in squad today you can sign ooc players as per previous years)?

As I understand it:

You can't sign players from another team after today (including on loan)

You can sell/loan players to teams in other countries and loan them to teams in the football league until the end of August.

I assume if you lose a player from your named 25 to another team, you can fill the gap with a free agent.

I could find nothing in the PL hand book on the date for the 25, - this was the most likely comment which suggests the naming date is tomorrow:

Changes to a Squad List may be made:
U.6.1. during the period of a Transfer Window; or
U.6.2. at other times only with the permission of the Board.

If it is tomorrow - then if we only sign Ayew and don't offload anyone we have 26 senior players with Innis the obvious one not to be named. That would mean anyone subsequently loaned out or sold abroad would not be able to be replaced as IIRC spaces for out of contract players are based on the date the squad is named?

I wonder if U.6.2 though will be used up until 31st August.

Like the look of Sclupp in that wide left midfield role. Think he played there occasionally under Sam (?). Has the pace and energy to chase things down and be a really handful and is pretty good going forwards on the break. As a left back he’s still slightly suspect both positionally and technically in defending (although decent back up). Not sure I would prefer Souare over Schupp at left back though.

So, I believe as it stands, we actually have two decent options for each position, if not more:

Goalkeepers

1. J. Speroni
2. W. Hennessey
3. V. Guaita

Right-Backs

4. J. Ward
N/A A. Wan-Bissaka

Centre Backs

5. S. Dann
6. M. Sakho
7. M. Kelly
8. J. Tomkins

Left-Backs

9. P. Souare
10. P. van Aanholt
11. J. Schlupp

Central Midfielders

12. J. McArthur
13. J. Williams
14. L. Milivojevic
15. C. Kouyate
16. M. Meyer
17. J. Riedewald

Att. Midfielders/Strikers

18. J. Puncheon
19. W. Zaha
20. A. Townsend
21. C. Benteke
22. C. Wickham
23. A. Sorloth
24. S. Kaikai
25. J. Ayew

Well, it looks like the squads aren’t declared until Sept 1 after the other windows close as there are no updates on the PL web page. It stays an interesting discussion as to how many players RH thinks he needs which determines how many go on loan (or sold abroad) from the 26 we have.

We have 20 who are nailed on to stay (plus AWB of course) and 6 who may move, with RH seeming to indicate that he is actively encouraging some to move to play games.

Souare - we have 4 other players who can play LB, assuming RH hasn’t defined Schlupp as a MF player only. Souare also is only really a LB. seems certain to be moved on

Innis - never near the first team, will be gone

Kai Kai - Ayew added to the players ahead of him, unlikely to stay.

The interesting dynamic is the 3 midfielders - Punch, Jairo and Jonny. We seem settled on playing 3 primary midfielder plus a wide man behind Wilf and Benteke. We have 4 regulars for those three spots in Luka, Macca, Meyer and Kouyate, so I would think we need 2 of those 3 back ups to stay to provide injury and suspension cover? Interesting to see who we chose.

Press conference intimated JW to stay and Riedewald to go, or at least that’s how I read it

Punch, not so obvious

He’s out buying a new set of commas for the season to come after running out in the transfer window.

Why would we even entertain letting players leave so we are left with less than 25 for our squad? Roy has said time and again our squad is thin so letting Riedewald and/or somebody else out without bringing anyone in would be plain stupid. We need to learn from last season and keep our players here.

Listen to the interview, we clearly want to send some players who RH deems surplus to requirements on loan, or sell abroad

It suggested to me that Roy needs to look at JW and will use the rest of August to do that.

Really?!

I have never seen any player as injury prone as him!!

Sadly he is just too brittle, 55 appearances since 2011! Crazy!
