In other words, because a young England qualified player had just joined Manchester United, the England hierarchy were happy to overlook whatever difficulties had been experienced during the under 21 tournament. It was only once Zaha fell out of favour at United and ended up back at Palace that those difficulties become more of an illustration of his 'attitude problem' to be rehashed ad nauseum by the likes of Henry Winter in the press.
In a similar vein, Manchester United player Michael Carrick threw his toys out of the pram when asked to go on the standby list for Euro 2012 and refused to do so. Terrible attitude. Yet within 6 months he found himself captaining England in a World Cup qualifier, and the incident is never mentioned by the media except in a sympathetic light when he blamed it on 'depression' in his recent autobiography. Indeed. On the plus side, it does mean that the chances of Wilf returning to Old Trafford are slimmer than they might otherwise have been.
Imagine how much seeing 'Wilf 2018' in a red and white shirt would hurt....
