Release clauses however are becoming a common part of the game and it does make a difference. If he doesn’t want to go it’s irrelevant to a degree but if city or Real Madrid come for him I’m sure he’d be tempted. It gives him the ability to make the decision. It’s not entirely irrelevant if he doesn’t want to go though. It’s a negotiation tool. His agent has played a blinder and a clause gives him more leverage in the future as it’s a long contract. If a club wants to raise the release clause the wage goes up accordingly. If a 50m and 100k a week player today is 100m and 200k a week in 2 years a player might say, hey average wage for my ability is 200k, I want a new contract. Clubs could say, nope you’ve got 3/4 more years on this deal, no chance. With the clause the club will probably say you are a key player we want to raise the clause to 200m to protect our investment the agent can negotiate the terms from a strong position. With fees ans wages as they are clauses will become an bigger and bigger part of the game

Parish said a long time ago he doesn't like release clauses because they only favour the player. It was also said that there was something in Wilf's last contract they wanted taken out. Hopefully no release clause.

That would be the most Palace thing ever. Enjoying our best ever run in the top flight, infrastructure in place for a prosperous future, hugely talented exciting squad, great manager and one of the best footballers around... wilf goes back in time to 2013, leaves and we are back in the championship!

We have every right to get very excited. I honestly thought this would be Wilf's last season at Palace but I can see him being here for a another couple of years after signing the new deal.

This doesn't change the fact he's very likely to leave next summer, but it shows his commitment right now and means we can ask for even more ££££ when the right team comes in at the right time.
