Great news!
And in terms of him leaving...I'm not convinced he will. He will probably not earn much more at other clubs than he is here. The chances of winning the league, or even playing in the champions league, are not guaranteed by moving to a big 6 club unless that club happens to be Manchester City and there are a lot of good players sitting on the Man City bench (but that's not to say that Wilf wouldn't start). How many players for the 'big six' barely win anything? - any player who has played for Tottenham or Liverpool during the last 10 years, most of the current Man Utd team except for a few who were there for the FA cup final etc etc. In contrast Wilf can create a legacy by staying at Palace, he could be one of those rare 'one team' players. If we won a cup and/or got into the Europa league maybe he's happy with that. It didn't work at Man Utd and I wonder if its annoying to Wilf that some (not us) may think he can't handle it at a big club. If so even if he was happy to stay here he might still want it known that its not due to a lack of belief or ambition, but that there's really no need to move. |

Highly doubt there is a release clause. They are not common in the Premier League except for "relegation break clauses" and will become less and less common as transfer fees worldwide continue their upward trend as a tight-lock release clause could look like a bargain within a year.
As Simon Jordan just said on talkSport - the new contract at best allows us to keep hold of our best ever player for a long time; at worst it guarantees his transfer value if he ever does leave. Shows immense respect and love for the club from Wilf who has given all the power back to the club in any transfer negotiations.

As a side point - it must be incredibly annoying where everywhere you go, people asking "are you leaving, where you going etc". Reading everywhere online/social media you're not happy and asking to leave. Basically your life is just full of lies in the public eye.
As for the Daily Mirror - f--k off! |

Win win for everyone. Major money for the club if he does decide he wants to play in the Champions League or having our best ever players playing for us for many years to come and entertaining us.
Bloody love Wilf.

Fab news!
And even if there is a release clause, you can be sure that SP made certain it was gigantic.

Absolutely fantastic news, what a legend he his, the ultimate Palace hero. There i was largely watching dross for forty years and along pops up a world class player from the youth who propels us to the top flight, keeps us there for 5 years and then commits to a 5 year deal when all the big boys are waving cash and salivating all over the place.
It really does defy belief and the love and respect i have for that player is off the scale. |
