New controversial Gillette ad

Gillette have released a new ad which addresses the issue of toxic masculinity and asks men to be the best they can be.

Currently causing a lot of controversy, on YT there are 23k likes and over 200k dislikes. A LOT of offended men. Personally, I really like it. I think its well made and touching. What do we think - if you find it offensive, why?

Ad generates lots of interest in a product. Sounds like the agency did their job.

Well done Sterling Cooper!

"Controversial"

The only people who could possibly be bothered by this are the people the ad is aimed at. The amount of people missing the toxic part of toxic masculinity is... well, not really that surprising. Plus it's triggered Piers Morgan, so it's the perfect ad IMO.

No problem with the message, I just have a problem with companies who quite clearly are using such obvious political messages for commercial gain. They would never stick their necks out if there was going to be serious risk of reputational damage.

Opportunism not ethics is the driver.

Triggered to a deadline every day, almost as if he doesn't really mean it.

Yup, both 'sides' of their argument boost the sales revenue arguing over it whilst Gilette probably carry on using Mexican/Chinese child slaves to make the products and come out the heroes. And we wonder why 42 people own more than half the worlds wealth.

Oh, he's obviously trolling. But you can tell it actually does bother him. He's just able to use his delicate nature to his advantage.

I have no problem whatsoever with opportunism not ethics driving marketing providing the message is legal decent etc.

Good message, who cares if its a company who's slogan is "The best a Man Can Get"?

Mind you, gingers always deserve a slap. ............

Thought this take was pretty decent

Quote:
There are good things about the scripting of the ad, IMO. Eg the victims of bullying, abuse harassment & violence shown are other men & boys as much as (if not more than) women & girls. This is accurate, important & surprisingly unusual within this discourse.

That said, there is a lot about it that is bad. Firstly, there's a huge problem with the strong implication that there are "already" some "good men" who are doing the right thing. This division into the good men & the bad men is profoundly stupid & unhelpful.

The reality is that there are good behaviours & bad behaviours & all men (all people, ofc, but stick with the topic for now) can be responsible for good or bad behaviours to different degrees & in different circumstances.

(Just check how many earnest, halo-polishing prominent male academic feminists turn out to be waggling their dicks at every passing teenage female students, for starters.)

More seriously, perhaps, the implication that harmful masculine behaviours occur because other men allow them to occur is infantile, reactionary politics which ignores how gender roles are constructed within hegemonic culture to serve structural purposes.

In brief, boys don't just sometimes grow into abusive violent men because they choose to or because they didn't have a clean-shaven role model to point them on the right path but are sometimes made into abusive violent men by a culture & society which brutalises & socialises them to become like that & unless this type of narrative engages with that then it is pissing in the wind.

The way we socialise & raise our boys is not the atomised personal moral decisions of individual men, but a system imposed upon all of us by economics & culture, so too are the solutions or the alternatives to that.

Related to that, selling this stuff as individualised consumer politics really pisses me off, particularly when it's coming from a multinational like Procter & Gamble who are indulging corporate exploitation on a global, industrial scale and have a whole ****ton of stuff they could be doing themselves to challenge their own exploitation, abuse and role in the construction of restrictive & harmful gender roles before they start on this. Motes & beams, kids.

Finally, I think there are ways that companies like this can engage with the politics of gender & masculinity in constructive ways that (most importantly) don't immediately piss off & alienate a large proportion of their potential audience.

I think the Gillette advert could have engaged men far more effectively on this topic with a different tone if they'd been inviting their audience to identify & be proud of the guys who are getting it right, in the exact same way that the traditional Gillette "Best A Man Can Get" ad invites us to identify with the firefighter saving a puppy from a building despite most of us actually sitting in our y-fronts eating Wotsits.
