Only the bloke and his doctor could answer that. I just think Southern and the people they employ to perform this role go about it the wrong way and at the wrong time of day in rush hour. Like I said de-classify all the trains and free up more seats during these times of shitty service.

There is no reason to have first class in a commuter train.

I think it's part of the terms of the franchise (that's what I was told a few years ago)

i agree. first class was going to be scrapped, but i think some of the "suits" who live on the coast/outside of london are prepared to pay for more chance of a seat.

In my experience first class compartments are rarely if ever full, except when they have been declassified of course.

first class passengers should be ignored - after all they are silly enough to pay extra for a bit of napkin draped over the top of the seat.

top tip - always push out a smelly fart when walking through first class.

I've been on a few southern services recently that a message has come up on the screen saying that first class is declassified for metro services.

Is a "metro" service one that's in London then or is a few selected routes around London.

I did think it was sort of designed to trick you so they could come round on other trains and fine you thinking you were allowed. Maybe that's just my general distrust of the company though.

Why does the service suddenly change as soon as October hits?

Pretty much exactly the same every year - Still an appalling service from Sanderstead to Victoria but at least I only get to work a maximum of 10 minutes late.

From October to March pretty much every day my train gets in a good 15-20 minutes late.

If the trains can't cope with darker mornings, dew on the lines and the temperature dropping below 15 degrees why don't Southern amend the timetable to reflect that the 08.09 from Sanderstead will arrive at Victoria for around 08.50 instead of the advertised 08.37?

I wish I didn't have to. I worked in Croydon for a while, which was a 15 minute walk into work. The only thing good about it was the lack of commute. Everything else sucked. I love working in London.

When Mrs Gooders and I go up to town we drive to Morden and get the tube. It's generally a brilliant service.

I wouldn't trust an overland train home late at night after a gig for love nor money.

It's the only time they tend to run ok!

The only good thing about the awful service, is that if I have a quick pint at work and it becomes more than 1, I can inevitably get away with blaming the trains.

As the years have gone by it has become busier and less chance of a seat so I started getting an earlier train and have gradually moved from 7.30am to 5.40am currently. It also seems that there are fewer problems earlier in the day except the obvious over running engineering works that sometimes happen after the weekend. All in all I prefer the early start with less hassle than using the trains in the core rush hours, luckily I have the flexibility in my work that allows that.
