southern thameslink, southwestern - the latter rising up the delay/cancellation league are quite happy for blame to be put on staff when really it is their policies of cost cutting refusal to invest and absolute priority given to profits and the needs of the shareholders that lies at the heart of the problem. Overcrowding is reaching an inhumane level at times but no-one seems to care. All Grayling can come up with is a new HS2 extension
Commuting is now the worst part of the day.

You're right about one thing though. I don't care why there's a strike. I'm just a customer, it doesn't matter what I think eh.
I am a customer too and i take a slightly differnt view then you. Its not unusual its what happens in life.

Of course. It's not your opinion that I've tried to change, I've just tried to get your thoughts on the justification of the disruption that it causes people's lives.

So far I've not had any luck in that but your'e not the only one. Nobody on here has given me a reason why the public should be so inconvenienced over something that has nothing to do with them.

So it's a bit unfair to single you out I suppose but there you go. I'm sure you don't lose any sleep over it.

And yes, I am that much of a twat in real life. Worse.

lol... have you listened to any of this thread or are you sucking Peter Wilkinson and the DfT off?!

a) You dont get paid when on strike, these managers get bonuses.

b) the majority "off sick" are... OFF SICK... there will be a few bad apples in every occupation

c) The job may not be needed in current format, but a second safety trained person is needed on trains, and it is safer for them to operate doors than drivers.

d) well paid inflated job........ shift work is well worth the "generous" pay.

e) protecting their job......... whats wrong with that.

f) the majority also ARE fighting for the safety of passengers.

The "striking" staff are not affecting the services everyday, but poor management and the London Bridge disruption is....

i understand you are at the end of your tether, but the striking staff really are not to blame here.

I am currently travelling on a driver only Southern train. It seems fine, the doors are opening at every station and quite frankly I reckon we don't need a guard.

Amen to that.

People have been conditioned by Southern and the DfT's [Peter Wilkinson's] PR machine to think that every single train that is cancelled is because of a lack of train crew, and that if staff are off sick they are faking it.

The only "evidence" that staff are "faking it" was that the number of sick days have increased.

Well no wonder, given the nasty tactics Southern have implied which have stopped people swapping shifts to see sick relatives and arrange childcare etc, not to mention the threats they have made, that's going to affect staff's health for sure.

The main problem is, quite evidently, GTR/DfT management's utter incompetence and the Government's intention to pin everything on the unions. Just look at Peter Wilkinson's comments to the Select Committee - he's utterly clueless.

The evidence is out there, but it's easy to blame the unions so people like Payroll Legend do so, because all he cares about is getting a better service. He thinks that by running DOO and sacking all the guards everything will suddenly be great again, but it won't.
