Good to see our team (fourth division) give Pompey (second division) a good run for their money. It's the women's equivalent of Accrington Stanley versus Leeds, I guess.
Well done ladies! |

Enjoyed that. Much better match day experience than the mens. Laid back, Beer in the stands and Players, Staff and fans all mingling on the pitch after the game.
Will also go again. One club, One community.

I really enjoyed that today. A great performance from the ladies and so unlucky not to pull it back to 3-3. The atmosphere in the stand was cracking and it was a day at the football how it should be. I'll definitely be going to see them again (theres a league decider coming up soon i think). As has been said, One community, One club!

My daughter and l were walking across the S.N. Country Park at around 2:30 on the way to her Grans, could hear the chanting drifting across the park loud and clear.

Great day yesterday, really unlucky not to get another goal to haul Pompey back level but it was a very spirited performance.
In the club house afterwards mixing in with players, management and officials afterwards it striked everyone how well the girls did. The Pompey team looked older then our squad which is largely made up of teenagers and you could tell why the Pompey squad had the physical advantage over the Palace. The Palace Ladies first team can still win the league and have a huge game against Maidstone next month (possibly 9th April) in which they will need all the support they can get. I'd urge everyone that may be free for the game to get down and cheer on the ladies as the club really do deserve it after years and years of trying to get to a good standard and all the hardwork of the volunteers at the club that hold Palace close to their hearts! |

Honestly, I'm not just saying this for the sake of it but you won't find a more enjoyable experience than watching the Palace ladies team outside of watching the mens. If you can get to the Sports Centre.... Go!
This is the big one against Maidstone. There is a lot of history with them and are the girls biggest rivals. If they win they go 2nd with 3 more games in hand! I'll be going again, glad its at the Sports Centre this time although the Arena was quite enjoyable, watching Palace at the Palace feels a little nostalgic even though its not the 'original' ground its close enough and probably as close as we will ever get to watching Palace in a competitive match there. A load of us will be in the Grape and Grain pre match from 12. Perfect for you ale drinkers out there supposedly! |

A Palace anorak writes: The Athletics Stadium is very much the site of the ground that Palace used between 1905 and 1915 and also staged 20 FA Cup Finals between 1895 and 1914. The actual pitch was a bit further away, although it would have been about where the Jubilee Stand (built in 1977) is, some of it would have overlapped the current pitch - so it is really the same place. Where the Indoor Sports stadium is now, was the site of what was originally an Athletics and Cycle Track, which also had a pitch - and palace actually used both pitches for games, as sometimes a bigger event was held on the 'Cup Final' ground and vice versa - which is pretty unique for any club to have two grounds to use. The Palace Academy have an Indoor Dome that is used by CPFC now, this is almost certainly on the site of the Athletics and Cycle track that Palace used 100 years ago too. The Grape and Grain also has a rather strange connection. It was originally the site of the Royal Crystal Palace Hotel, built at the same time the Palace building was moved from Hyde Park to what was then called 'Norwood Heights' in 1854. The Hotel took a direct hit from a bomb in World War Two, where it had stood for over 90 years became rebuilt as the Pub that is now called the Grape and Grain (formerly called The Sportsman). It had a large ornamental Eagle on it's balcony facing the original Palace building, just a coincidence, but rather a spooky one when you think about it! It was certainly enjoyable watching the Palace ladies give the Pompey ladies a great fight back, after going three goals down - they showed great character and I'm pretty sure they will give the rest of their matches in the League their best shot, us turning up in decent numbers can only give them a bit more spirit, which they fully deserve, because they are doing the club proud.

Hopefully next season the ladies can get a bit more of a regular attendance. Perfect in the fact its local, free (can give donations to the ladies due to not being club funded) and that of course it is Crystal Palace FC! |

Great pic Seba. Look right at the bottom of the picture, centrally you will notice what is a cricket Pavillion. Although it's not certain, many historians think this is where the original Crystal Palace FC (formed in 1861) played their matches - the reason is that there was actually a Crystal Palace Cricket Club that played there from as early as 1857 (there are records that prove this) - many of the oldest football clubs were formed from cricket clubs. In another twist of fate, the cricket pitch later became used by the London Cricket Club founded by the legendary W.G. Grace. W.G. Grace was a leading figure in trying to form the professional version of Crystal Palace FC we have now, back in 1904 - but the FA turned down the steering commitee's application that Grace headed, because they didn't want a Club owning the FA Cup Final ground (with the revenue from the Final) having this advantage over the other League clubs of the time. Subseqently a new application was made in 1905, which Grace was no longer part of, the new CPFC were accepted as they rented the grounds from the Crystal Palace Company which had built the grounds and wanted a professional club to use them, for obvious reasons.
