Which of the following is most likely to enable us to avoid relegation this year?
1) A new centre-back (Mamadou Sakho) 2) A new right wing-back 3) A new goalkeeper 4) A change in tactics/formation 5) A new manager (note - this is not the correct answer) 6) Donald Trump/Kim Jong Un/WWIII |

Every season we make the same mistakes.
The depth of the squad is weak, our first team hasn't really improved and we havent replaced the glaringly obvious I.e. Goalkeeper. Is anyone really surprised we were humped 3-0?

We have a formation that has worked in the past and we have players to excel in it, why don't we use it? 4231

How can FDB be expected to revolutionise our playing style with players who are essentially schooled in Pulis / Allardyce methods?
Do you think Parish's determination to save pennies (waiting until DD to sign players) has impacted on our ability to be ready for the start of the season? Why did our pre-season campaign only consist of four 1st team matches? |

Allardyce took 8 games to implement his changes. Aren't people overreacting after one game? A cultural/tactical evolution wasn't going to happen overnight

FDB has had pre season, Allardyce didn't.

Can we never speak of that game again?

Didn't we only play about 4 pre season matches? Most teams probably had close to double that.

That would be extremely fair, yes.

It wasn't just about the system, and it certainly was not about personnel. It was poor performance in every department of the pitch.

Quote:
Making so many changes from the side that has played most of pre-season and altering the whole right hand side of the team, appeared strange at 2 o'clock. By 4.45 it appeared foolish. The players didn't execute the game plan as well as we would hope - no doubt - but they weren't helped in it by the manager's decisions either. |

Exactly. This "best coach in the world" is a complete myth. One of the most famous defenders in the world I agree.

Good pod. Top input from Kevin who thankfully, and manfully, managed to stop it from descending into a depressing maelstrom. The result was that it became more balanced. Some good and bad points (depending on perspective) but rounded which TBH was quite an achievement.
I have to add that a few times I have posted last year (constructive, I hope) concerns as a listener that Kev can sometimes, inadvertently hog the mic a little, and enthusiastically talk over the others. This hasn't been the case so far this year and he handled it well when it happened to him. So fair dos, only fair that I should post the positives/improvements. Good session and not an easy one guys.

I found some of Kevin Day's comments odd. He kept saying we had brought in youngsters who need time but none started or came on against Huddersfield - or have I missed something? Turning on the fans for being frustrated - I suppose it depends where you sit but I didn't hear much and the players weren't booed off. I think it was reasonable. I actually clapped off the Huddersfield players - more out of shock over what I had just seen than anything else.
Day also said we probably would have lost with our usual system - that's a leap in logic that isn't justified. It stands to reason that we would have had more success if we weren't playing a new system where half the team isn't suited to it. Anyway, it was a good discussion. It's not all doom and gloom of course and 4-5 quality signings before Swansea will go a long way to rectifying things. If we don't make signings then we will probably get what we deserve. |
