Wasn't Sorloth his #1 target?

This does remind me a bit of Pardew's last season, where we won a couple early then went on a dreadful run. Think most people at this stage were backing him, but by mid-November/early December pretty much everyone wanted him out. It's hard to see how we won't be on a dreadful run come December so whilst nobody's expecting a scalp against the big boys I think he may be struggling if he doesn't get one.

On the actual run (of those games) it didn't seem that bad, but when you look at those games written down and just the one point to show for it, it shows just how poor we've been.

I'm getting close to "Sack!" purely based on his game management. It's criminal, he is practically giving away points.

BACK
In the same way that it was totally inexplicable that West Brom sacked Tony Pulis last season, I would draw the same comparison for us this season. Yes, things are disappointing but Roy is exactly the kind of manager we would want in a relegation fight - so why on earth sack him during the season? (I have no issue with him being sacked at the end of the season assuming an alternative is lined up). The second reason is who would be a credible replacement? I've tried to draw up a longlist, and there really aren't any obvious candidates available. Sam Allardyce - Not sure he'd come back, or the Board (or fans) would have him. But if he would come back, he's the only short term option I would support. David Moyes - he's a bigger risk than Roy Paul Lambert - see David Moyes Steve Bruce - plenty of water under the bridge since 2001, but his record of keeping teams up is mixed. Again hardly an upgrade on Roy. Chris Coleman - did well with Wales. But club record is v mixed. Also tactically not sure he's great. Roberto Di Matteo - a terrible record (albeit just 12 games at Villa) out of work since 2016 Claudio Ranieri - out of work since being sacked by Nantes. But at 67, feels like a Hodgson type appointment without the defensive organisation. Mick McCarthy - excellent Championship manager, but not up to it in the top flight Glenn Hoddle or Alan Curbishley - both excellent managers in my view. But haven't been in work since 2006 and 2008 respectively. They would have to be regarded as major risks having been out of management for 10+ years. The only other out of work manager I'd be tempted by is Quique Sanchez Flores his record across 15 years in management is excellent. Getafe 13th; Valencia 4th; Benfica 3rd & won Cup; Athletico 9th, 7th, Europa League & Spanish Cup; Watford 13th in the first PL back; Espanyol 8th & 11th. In work managers: Chris Wilder has clearly done an excellent job at Oxford, Northampton and now Sheffield United. But would be a huge risk to appoint someone without any top flight experience. He might want to see through the season to see if he can take United up this season anyway. Rafa Benitez, Sean Dyche and Eddie Howe all terrific managers. And whilst I can imagine circumstances in which all 3 would be tempted to leave their current clubs, I can't envisage any circumstance where they would choose us as a destination. The fact they know they are in demand, means they can be incredibly selective about their next club.

We have nothing going forward and have only conceded 11 goals. Are we going to sack the defence as well ?

Based on......
37 - that is the number of touches Sorloth has has this season across 7 matches, its less than 6 touches a game when he finally gets on. What does anyone expect him to do with that? That is across 81 minutes but in theory when we should be trying to get the ball up front, into the box and score goals. Last season he played 4 times from the start, Everton away and then 3 of the top 6 and he looked better. Everton 60 touches, 2 shots, 1 on target, 4 chances created Spurs 35 touches, 1 shot, 1 on target, 0 chances created Man Utd 49 touches, 2 shots 1 on target, 2 chances created Chelsea 35 touches, 2 shots, 0 on target but one hit the post and had a goal incorrectly ruled out Thats an average of 45 touches, 1.75 shots, 0.75 on target per game, 1.5 chances created for others |

I reckon we'll get a scattering of points from the big clubs and then go on a run. I find the flaws as frustrating as anyone but I never saw a manager that came without flaws.

IF when we have an actual strike force and creative midfielders available and we get to January and we've gone no where then it might be the time to look at it. BUT if we actually had fit and raring to go replacements for Sako, Yo and RLC then I doubt we'd actually be in this mess. That is not Roys problem that is the club and a general lack of funds. The irony is next season we should have plenty of cash to spend as we won't get hit by FFP as a new cycle starts and I'm sure we can manouver around STCC. We needed three players and a goal keeper and we sort of did it but in typical Palace style we got either non identical replacements and/or needing building up due to lack of playing or having no summer break. I can't see how that is Roys issue. Do you think he said to the club lets do all our business in the last week of the window at the end of pre-season?

I'd sack only on the basis that I see no long-term benefit in keeping him, although I'd wait until someone else is as good as lined up to replace him (not Freedman).
The job he did last season was excellent but I don't see anything to suggest he'll turn us around from where we are now. We have a reasonably good squad with a couple of very good players and I think we'll struggle towards a 15th/16th place finish if we keep Roy. However, I think we'd probably be able to manage this if we replaced Roy with any other capable manager. If we did make a change and someone with fresh ideas came in then I think we could still challenge the top 10 if whoever comes in could get the best out of Zaha, Luka, PVA, Sakho, Townsend etc like Roy did last year. Sentiments aside, I think sacking Roy is relatively low-risk as I honestly don't think this squad of players could do that much worse than they currently are. Saying that, I'd be quite happy with a new manager every 12/18 months |
