We need Benteke back as we have few if any other options. But unless he starts scoring again then we will need to find someone who can. His job - above all others - is to score goals. |

If the suggestions are right that the knee injury he had operated on was the same one he had at the start of last season it might explain to an extent why he was so far below what we would expect. If he comes back in a few weeks time and gets double figures for the season it would make a huge difference to us. Personally I am not going to write him off before he even plays again and will wait till he has been given his chance post surgery before condemning him. |

The knee injury didn’t affect him GG - I remember two interviews he gave after returning from the initial injury and then this summer where he clearly said he felt great.
Let’s hope he returns as the striker who did well for us in 16/17 but let’s also not make up excuses for his poor form over the last year. He needs to stand up and be counted now - the team needs him to start scoring goals. |

Here is a question to ponder, if and a bloody huge if, he scores ten league goals this season, do you try and sell in the summer, assuming we could recoup our transfer fee or keep ?

Ten PL goals a season is not an adequate return for his cost, MONEYBALL

No, but having only scored two penalties at home all season (and our next home game is in December!), I would take that.

I'd sell him. He isn't a great fit for us. If we can get £20m for a player with one year left on his contract (ie next summer) then that would be a fantastic deal. I doubt it will happen though. My hunch is that he'll leave on a free transfer when his contract comes to an end.

Chinese market is our only hope to recoup money. Needs to be seeing an amazing sports psychologist as part of his recovery

Anyone that thinks Benteke does not improve our current team is a complete baboon IMHO. He’s a country mile better than the other options of Ayew and Sorloth.

Benteke has better hold up play. Sorloth runs the channels more, he also faster, more mobile and seems to be more eager to get a shot off.

Sorloth and faster is not 2 words i expect to see in the same sentence.

Hard to disagree with that and there is surely a good player in there still somewhere? Two or three goals, whether they are lucky defections, tap ins or screamers, might give him the confidence he is so clearly lacking? One goal from open play in forty odd games and countless easy chances paints a pretty bleak picture though.

Goals come first of course and hold up play is vital too but the other big reason for missing him is presence at defending set pieces. He is as valuable as Dann was at attacking set plays. He’s a far better header of the ball than any of our central defenders and may have made the difference against Spurs.

Benteke is benteke and changes the way we play and more importantly how the other teams has to defend even without touching the ball. The aerial threat is there and we have the ability to cross. Without benteke they don’t even bother stopping us having the ball in crossing areas because we will invariably try to pass it into nonexistent spaces in the area or dribble. With benteke there a cross is dangerous and so defenders come out to close down midfielders earlier, block the cross etc.. then zaha, Meyer, Townsend, Pva, ayew, jimmy... whoever get the space we haven’t had. Ayew is back up to zaha, an option wide, off of benteke or part of a front three. He is not the ******* target man he’s been asked to play Sorloth is risky as he doesn’t seem ready and needs to improve hold up play, heading etc

(1) that isn't saying much and (2) it's not enough. He needs to deliver the goals - he's a £30m, £120k per week striker. We have the right to expect a lot more.

I would imagine we are more likely to go for a rest of season loan in Jan.
I doubt we would be able to entice a decent striker into the usual Palace relegation scrap. I wonder if we could get Defoe on loan. He can't seem to get a game at Bournemouth. Proper goal scorer
