And in a few years time when wilf’s gone and our next swift tricky black winger comes along and the youngsters start singing ‘he’s just too good for you’ the same debate will be had

Vince's recall of the club post-Venables departure suggest we were a complete basket case behind the scenes. Vince despairs at the catalogue of sub-standard players and managers, Noades' cost-cutting and general small-minded approach. Fascinating record of what was going on.

It’s pretty much an accurate record of the problems at the club at that time, although his timeline on managers is a bit off. In fairness to Ron, he acquired a club that was in a serious financial mess.

The timeline of the managers is accurate. Allison - Venables - Walley - Allison - Gradi - Kember - Mullery - Bassett

I meant in terms of who owned the club at the times the managers were in place. As I recall (possibly incorrectly) the manager in place when Ron took over was Malcolm. Ron at the time was quoted as saying that he wasn't sure whether he would be able to work with him – and answered that question by sacking him within days of taking over. Dario was his first appointment.

So Ernie Walley, briefly, and Malcolm were Bloye appointments not Ron Noades appointments. The book suggests otherwise.

Have read Vince's book. Great read and a great insight into the team of the 80's and some of the reasons why it all went wrong

Just finished the book, a very interesting read, especially about the Palace gets. I started going in 1979 as a 6 year old and worshipped Vince. I was so oblivious to the carnage that happened post venables.
Ernie walley sounds like a nutter and Howard Wilkinson at Leeds sounds exactly like you expect from him.
The booze culture at Pompey is fascinating, can’t believe these guys were pro footballers.
Vince didn’t quite say what he was doing now but hope he makes a few bob from the book.

Vince did say he did a bit of building work/roofing for a while after he stopped playing (some bloke from the Pompey hooligan firm looked after him workwise!) but he was afraid of heights! From what he said he had 3 years to bridge before he got his footballers pension, so reading between the lines, once he started getting that he didn't need to do much.

He now works as a DJ a couple of nights a week at bars in Portsmouth, and he also does matchday corporate hosting at pompey.

I enjoyed the book, I think the best word to describe it is 'honest' - he openly admits his faults and admits his football declined and never reached the heights it could have.

He was also quite honest in admitting that if he could have joined the Venables-led exodus of Palace players to QPR, he would have done, as would many other Palace players. Those that were left at Palace saw their careers largely stagnate/decline.

I would also thoroughly recommend the book.

I know Vince personally. He gets by with some DJ work these days. An absolute top lad who is great to talk to about football.

Gets by. Annoys me when I think that even mediocre players in this day and age won't have to get by when they pack up.

Very interesting read. Can't believe the drinking culture at Pompey - Mid season breaks in Jersey, just to get drunk !!
Sad to think that someone as talented as Vince, is nowhere near as comfortably off, as he should be, now.

His career tailed off and came to an end ridiculously early by today's standard - not quite turned 30 when he lost his place in the Leeds side (the year the got promoted) and that was that bar a couple of brief stints at Stoke and Exeter.

I got the book for my birthday a few weeks back and enjoyed it although I couldn't help feeling a sense of vague melancholy as I read it. A career unfulfilled in many ways, he really should have been one of the big players of the 1980s.
