Crystal Palace Development Centre

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned previously but the Crystal Palace Development Centre at East Grinstead is going from strength to strength under the guidance of Head Coach Bob Wallis .

They are providing training for boys aged 7 to 13 using the same training methods as used by the Academy with whom they have regular games. The emphasis is on skills - moving the ball quickly and learning positional sense.

At U9 level Palace coaches have been visiting the top local junior sides such as Crawley United, East Grinstead and Chesworth Rovers (Horsham) and inviting their best players to train at The Development Centre.

Its hoped that the better boys will progress to The Academy. Incidentally the Development Centre U9s recently played and defeated the Academy U-9s.

The whole venture is proving so successful that other clubs are now visiting the tournaments where the Palace boys are playing and a number have been offered a chance to trail at other clubs including Chelsea and for the newly formed Crawley Town Academy. It would be dissappointing if the Development Centre merely provided boys for other clubs although it is positive that they are learning to play the correct way. Therefore its good to report that one Horsham lad turned the Chelsea scout down in favour of staying at The Development Centre.

It wouldn't be fair to name any U9/10s at this stage but there are at least half a dozen from the junior teams mentioned who show a lot of potential and who will improve significantly.

It is of a standard below the Academy - a sort of half way house. The notion is, I believe, for Palace to have a presence in the area and for the Development Centre to act partly as a feeder for The Academy with boys moving to and from the Academy (as is all ready happening)

The Development Centre is also to be a commercial outlet for Palace by making a profit on providing football training for boys. It has gone from strength to strength in the past year and will expand its scope in the coming season.

The facilities are excellent as the centre is based at the East Grinstead hockey club which has international status.

Yes and the Development Centre is less than a year old - it got a boost when the club changed ownership.

Crystal Palace Development Centre Lads on Saturday

The highlight of the family day for me last Saturday was watching the Crystal PalaceDevelopment Centre lads at half time . The speed of passing and technical skills exhibited was a revelation. They are obviously being coached very well because their touch was generally first rate and the movement especially out wide was exceptional.

How does the Crystal Palace Development Centre tie in with the Academy given that one is in Sussex and the other in south London.

Anyone know how you go about getting a trial at these development centres? My son goes to a Chelsea one at the moment but my preference would be for a Palace one obviously but also I hear better things about the Palace one

Depends on your location, Crystal Palace Foundation have development centres based in Sutton, Croydon and Bromley.

Best off to phone CPFC and ask to be put through to the Foundation.

Sounds like it's laying some long term foundations which is a good step. I know when Pardew was here there was some reference to a new approach and have to assume this is part of it. This stuff takes ages and by definition it's an investment in the future. Hopefully it builds the club. Also probably just as well they haven't over promoted it yet.
