Following palace in poor weather

On the back of travelling up to Huddersfield at the weekend and crawling home in blizzards, I was wondering if anyone else had memories of similar experiences, be it at the ground or to/from.

I also had the misfortune of travelling to Everton a few years back with the high wind postponement (which I didn't think was too bad) and the Liverpool home "flashflood" postponement.

30 January 1993 - can’t remember a colder day standing on the Holmesdale losing to Tottenham.

I seem to recall losing 3-1 to Crewe, or Scunthorpe on an extremely foggy Tuesday night 15-20 years ago and cheering for the ref to call the game off.

Forest-Palace replay - the year after we got to the Cup Final.

Seem to remember it being cancelled at least once on the night of the game.

Port Vale and Watford away in very heavy fog (at Port Vale you couldn't see past the halfway line and Palace fans didn't know we'd scored until a player emerged out the fog toward us celebrating!)

Coldest has to be Hartlepool in the FA Cup

Wettest (not abandoned) Chelsea at home in the League Cup, including a puddle on the goal line

Bradford away players sploshing in rain puddles was abandoned at half time!

Hottest? Burnley away opening day (3-2)? Or the game in Turkey

Whilst I wasnt at Huddersfield last week probably the worst travelling conditions were a few years back when we travelled to Nottingham Forest it was a cold day and started snowing on the way up but there was no snow in Nottingham. On the way back the M1 was clear until we got to Northampton then the M1 ground to a halt in heavy snow. The supporters coach eventually got back to Selhurst about 2am

A win at Oxford on Boxing Day 1997, it pissed down the whole match.

I think the wettest I ever got was away at Portsmouth. Seated, no roof, and it pissed down before during and after the game - probably early 2000s (maybe 2004?)

I remember watching Palace against Sunderland in the League Cup one night and it was very, very cold. I remember saying to my Dad as the players came out for the second half that I would have struggled to get going again in that temperature. Sure enough Fan Zhiyi pulled up with a torn hamstring almost immediately.

I think my penis turned inside out it was so cold.

Blackpool 2-2, October 2008. Combination or torrential rain and hail on an open stand next to the sea. I didn't have a coat for some reason.

- Swindon 2-0 win in April 97' got absolutely soaked in an open away end.
- (As Dorking mentioned) Port Vale in a 4-3 midweek cup defeat in early 96'. The fog was that extreme we couldn't see the other end so the 300 fans in the away end were second guessing half the time. We must have missed at least 3 of the goals as a result.
-Hottest was Burnley away on the opening day in 2003. Great game but the train journey home was horrific. From memory the Burnley to Sheffield train post match was not only delayed, but then restricted to about 3 carriages and we were packed and dripping whilst still trying to drink our warm beers.
- Bristol City at home February 94' had some crazy adverse weather. We had snow showers, sleet in the first half followed by heavy rain in the second. Chelsea in the league cup 93' also deserves a mention.

Was against Crewe in 2003 before we went on the run under Dowie.

Only about 12,000 of us there for that one

Favourite chants included

Jordans got a fog machine doo dah doo dah.
He's here he's there he's every f***ing where, Mr Fog, Mr Fog.
I can't see, I can't see, I can't see a f***cking thing

None of us who were there could have dreamed that we would go on to win promotion that season.

Bolton in the fog

Peterborough one freezing cold Tuesday night. They equalised last minute (there’s a shock) to make it even worse

I was at Huddersfield at the weekend and it’s easily the coldest I’ve ever been at a football game. I was also at Nottingham Forest in 2010. I was invited to go along to a Christmas party and told my girlfriend I would meet her there at about 9pm... I eventually got back to Horsham at around 2am

The drive back the other day (Sunday morning) was an absolute doddle compared to the drive back from Forest in 2010.
